Restaurant with whale on wall?
Does anyone remember this restaurant with the giant whale on the wall? It is driving me nuts!

yeah maui beach cafe, i remember that whale. it was kind of a bold choice for a restaurant that mostly served like, standard american surf & turf. if u want pics, check the la times photo archive from the late 90s, they had a few shots of it in the food section. also the westwood historical society has a flickr page with some random old storefront photos, might be buried in there
Oh man, I remember that whale. It was kind of a landmark for a while, you couldn't miss it if you were walking down Westwood toward the Bruin Theater. I think the restaurant changed concepts a couple times before it became Corner Bakery, but that whale sculpture was always the one constant. You might try the UCLA library's digital image archives, they have a bunch of old Westwood street photography from the 90s that could turn something up.
I walked past that place all the time in high school. The whale was basically a Westwood institution, visible through the big front windows from the street. If you're looking for photos, try the UCLA Architecture and Urban Design library's digital collection, they have a lot of 90s Westwood streetscapes. Also worth checking the Westwood Village Improvement Association's old newsletters, they sometimes featured local businesses.

honestly the guide is pretty solid but i think theyre sleeping on the food scene in the san gabriel valley. if you have a car and an afternoon, drive out to monterey park for some of the best chinese food in the country. the soup dumplings at din tai fung are famous for a reason but the real hidden gem is the xiao long bao at mei long village just down the street. way less of a wait and just as good. also for a chill evening that's not downtown, the rooftop at the standard on sunset has a great vibe and you can see
