Restaurant with whale on wall?

This is a little out there, but I'm having a memory of a restaurant from the late 90's/ early 2000s that had a giant blue whale sculpture on the wall. The head and front fins were literally "swimming"… This is a little out there, but I'm having a memory of a restaurant from the late 90's/ early 2000s that had a giant blue whale sculpture on the wall. The head and front fins were literally "swimming" out of the wall and hanging over the restaurant, and the whale had a bunch of barnacles on it. I remember it being on the back wall of a big open restaurant, and for some reason I think it was in Westwood Village, but I'm not positive on that.

Does anyone remember this restaurant with the giant whale on the wall? It is driving me nuts!

UPDATE! It was Maui Beach Cafe in Westwood Village!!!

yeah maui beach cafe, i remember that whale. it was kind of a bold choice for a restaurant that mostly served like, standard american surf & turf. if u want pics, check the la times photo archive from the late 90s, they had a few shots of it in the food section. also the westwood historical society has a flickr page with some random old storefront photos, might be buried in there

Oh man, I remember that whale. It was kind of a landmark for a while, you couldn't miss it if you were walking down Westwood toward the Bruin Theater. I think the restaurant changed concepts a couple times before it became Corner Bakery, but that whale sculpture was always the one constant. You might try the UCLA library's digital image archives, they have a bunch of old Westwood street photography from the 90s that could turn something up.

I walked past that place all the time in high school. The whale was basically a Westwood institution, visible through the big front windows from the street. If you're looking for photos, try the UCLA Architecture and Urban Design library's digital collection, they have a lot of 90s Westwood streetscapes. Also worth checking the Westwood Village Improvement Association's old newsletters, they sometimes featured local businesses.

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
