You should check out HomeState in Hollywood. They do a potato and rajas tamal that's vegetarian and actually has some heat, plus a black bean one that's not just beans and masa. They sell them frozen by the dozen for around $35, and you can order online for pickup. Their salsa verde is worth grabbing too, it's not the watery kind.
The Tamale Lady at the Echo Park Farmers Market on Sundays has a vegan black bean and sweet potato tamale that's pretty legit. She wraps them in banana leaves which keeps them moist, and they're usually $3.50 each or you can special order a dozen if you email her a few days ahead. if u can make it to the santa monica farmers market on wednesdays, there's a vendor called la esperanza that does a rajas con queso tamale that's vegetarian and actually spicy. they're $4 each but if u buy a dozen they knock it down to $40. also, yxta in downtown has a huitlacoche tamale that's surprisingly good for a restaurant version, not the usual elote thing at all
