Princess Diana memorial fountain is in Hyde Park, not a spot to meet people really. Try GoodGym for volunteering runs, they meet weekly and its easy to just turn up alone. Pub quizzes at teh Hemingford Arms in Islington are solid too.
Seconding the weekly quiz angle, the Lamb in Lamb's Conduit Street does a good Monday one and solo joiners are normal.

fair point, people mix those two up all the time. Fwiw the old diner site is just past the pike exit, not really a detour at all... shame it's gone tho.
