I wonder if their schedules are so ridiculously tight they feel the need to 'fail' deliveries so that they can shift the responsibility onto tomorrow's delivery driver ? I'm just baffled by why they wouldn't even attempt a delivery before saying I wasn't in.

honestly just start leaving a note that says "buzzer broken, call my mobile" even if it works fine. they'll ring you every time since they'd rather talk to you than haul boxes back to the depot. i'm in bethnal green and had the same issue with dpd until i did that, now it's rare they skip me. also check if your building has a porter or concierge, some of them accept parcels for free and it saves the whole game of delivery roulette

Yeah some drivers just don't even bother ringing now, I've had DPD do the same thing. I started putting 'call me on arrival' in the delivery notes and it actually helped a bit, they usually ring then. Still annoying you have to do that though.

It's been happening more and more in my block near Angel too. I've started watching for the van on Google Maps and buzzing them in myself before they even get to the door. Some drivers are just scanning everything as failed before they've even parked, especially if it's a big courier like Evri or Yodel. If you can, try using a local delivery locker near you, the ones in the Co-op or the corner shops around here seem to work better for avoiding this nonsense.

What are some innovative ways to anonymously compare rental prices in a city?

I'm looking for methods or platforms that allow residents to anonymously share and compare rental prices in their area. What options exist for this purpose? SpareRoom's "rooms wanted" ads are underrated for this. people post what they're currently paying alongside what they want next, so you can scrape a rough sense of going rates by postcode without anyone knowing you looked. it skews young and flatshare heavy tho, so not much use if you're after 2-beds in zone 2.

Another one is just the depozit or tenancy deposit scheme data. not public-facing, but your council's housing officer can tell you median rents from deposit registrations if you email them under FOI. takes weeks, but its proper anon and nobody clocks u.

Rightmove and Zoopla only show asking rents, which are often 10 to 15 percent above what a place actually goes for, so they're a poor benchmark. The trick I've used is the ONS Price Index of Private Rents, which breaks things down to borough level and is genuinely anonymous since it's aggregate data, no listing or account needed. For something more granular, the London Renters Union runs a rent reporting tool where you submit what you're paying with your postcode and it maps it against others nearby, though the coverage is patchy outside the inner boroughs.

the openrent "rent check" thing is decent for zones 3-4 where the unions tool barely reaches. also worth checking the london.gov.uk planning portal for new build applications, they list "affordable" and market rent figures per unit in the viability assessments, which is basically the developer telling the council what they expect to charge. bit of a faff to dig through but its public, anonymous & nobody knows ur looking
