tbh 8 hours is optimistic if you're leaving from london proper. more like 10-12 with the tunnel and traffic around brussels. if you're set on it, i'd say aim for aachen or even just the ardennes in belgium instead of pushing further into germany. the roads through the ardennes are gorgeous and you can find cheap hostels in dinant or liège for like 30 quid a night.

also, the 18th is a thursday so you'll hit rush hour around the m25 and then again near lille. leave by 5am or accept you'll be stuck in traffic for an extra hour. the tunnel is always a gamble but the ferries from dover to calais are cheaper and less stressful imo, just book a daytime crossing or you'll be waiting ages.

honestly that's a tight window for a roadtrip to germany from london. if you're leaving the 18th and coming back the 21st you're basically gonna spend like 8 hours each way just driving through france and belgium. make sure you've got eurotunnel booked way ahead or you'll be stuck at folkestone for ages.

if you're set on it, skip cologne and head straight for the eifel region near the nürburgring. the roads are way more fun and there's cheap camping spots around adenau. just watch out for the speed cameras on the autobahn, they're sneaky near construction zones.

if you're going all the way to germany for only 3 days, just pick one city and make it count. berlin's a solid choice if you're into nightlife, the train from london to brussels is like 2 hours then you can hop on an ice to berlin for another 6. way less hassle than driving through the m25 hell and paying for parking in a foreign city.

ngl the 18th-21st is basically a weekend trip. i'd skip the road trip idea entirely and look at cheap flights from stansted or luton to cologne or frankfurt. ryanair flights are like 30 quid each way if you book today, and you'll have way more time to actually see stuff instead of sitting in a car. the döner kebab spots near hauptbahnhof in cologne are worth the trip alone tbh

What are some innovative ways to anonymously compare rental prices in a city?

I'm looking for methods or platforms that allow residents to anonymously share and compare rental prices in their area. What options exist for this purpose? SpareRoom's "rooms wanted" ads are underrated for this. people post what they're currently paying alongside what they want next, so you can scrape a rough sense of going rates by postcode without anyone knowing you looked. it skews young and flatshare heavy tho, so not much use if you're after 2-beds in zone 2.

Another one is just the depozit or tenancy deposit scheme data. not public-facing, but your council's housing officer can tell you median rents from deposit registrations if you email them under FOI. takes weeks, but its proper anon and nobody clocks u.

Rightmove and Zoopla only show asking rents, which are often 10 to 15 percent above what a place actually goes for, so they're a poor benchmark. The trick I've used is the ONS Price Index of Private Rents, which breaks things down to borough level and is genuinely anonymous since it's aggregate data, no listing or account needed. For something more granular, the London Renters Union runs a rent reporting tool where you submit what you're paying with your postcode and it maps it against others nearby, though the coverage is patchy outside the inner boroughs.

the openrent "rent check" thing is decent for zones 3-4 where the unions tool barely reaches. also worth checking the london.gov.uk planning portal for new build applications, they list "affordable" and market rent figures per unit in the viability assessments, which is basically the developer telling the council what they expect to charge. bit of a faff to dig through but its public, anonymous & nobody knows ur looking
