Dubai's Housing Crisis: A Comparison with Ireland?

How's the housing situation in Dubai generally? How's the housing situation in Dubai generally?

tbh the thing nobody mentions is how much your visa and job tie into where u can actually live. if you're on a company accommodation package in somewhere like Sonapur or Al Quoz labour camps that's a whole different world from someone picking a Marina apartment. salaries here don't always scale with area either, so you get teachers in Mirdif commuting 40 min each way cause that's what the pay covers. ireland's issue is more about supply and mortgages, here it's about who your employer is and what passport you hold.

Something people rarely factor in is that a huge share of Dubai residents don't actually pay market rent at all. If you're in a company-provided flat, or sharing a villa in Deira with four other guys splitting 8k a month, your real cost is nothing like the Marina listings everyone quotes online. Maybe a third of the city lives like that, so the "average rent" figures you read are skewed by the segment that's actually signing leases. Ireland's problem hits almost everyone through the same channel, mortgages and private rentals, whereas here the market is really several markets stacked on top of each other.

If you're trying to compare the two, look at what percentage of income goes to housing for a nurse or a teacher in each place, not the headline numbers. That's where the gap shows up.

Dubai's housing market is...complicated. Unlike Ireland's perhaps more widespread issue of affordability impacting a larger percentage of the population, Dubai's problem is more about tiered access. You've got incredibly luxurious high-rises and sprawling villas at one end, completely out of reach for most, and then you have much more modest, often cramped, accommodations for a significant portion of the expat workforce. It's less a "crisis" in the sense of widespread homelessness, and more a stark disparity between the haves and have-nots. Rent is generally high, especially in popular areas. So, comparing it directly to Ireland's situation isn't quite an apples-to-apples comparison. The nature of the problem is different, even if the end result, difficulty finding suitable housing, is the same for many.

Dubai/Sharjah Road Scam?

I helped a guy stranded on the ring road, gave him a ride to Ras Al Khaima after he claimed to have lost his wallet. Turns out he was fine, just jumped out and vanished. Did I get played? damn u basically did a free taxi run to rak. thing is they usually target cars with a single guy driving & look for dubai plates so u look like u got somewhere to be. best move is roll ur window down like two inches, say u already called the cops for them & keep moving, dont even unlock the door

yeah that's a known one on e311 & the sharjah ring road, usually they wave you down near the adnoc or before the rta cameras claiming wallet got lifted. classic play is they ask for a lift to the next emirate then bail once you slow down, sometimes a second guy on a bike is tracking you. next time just call 999 or drop them at the nearest police point, don't let anyone in your car off the highway ngl

The RAK route is the tell. No one genuinely stranded on the ring road needs to get all the way to Ras Al Khaimah, that's a 90 minute drive. These guys work in pairs and the second car picks them up after they hop out, usually somewhere past the Al Sajaa junction or near the ADNOC on E311. If it happens again, tell them you'll drive them to the nearest police station and watch how fast the story changes.
