I'm out of Dubai (I'm in my home country) and will send the employer my passport for visa and residency cancellation processes. I checked it and they do need original physical passport.

Yet, I'm a bit worried. Could it be a problem of sending the physical passport? I cannot go to. Dubai right know and they say if they cannot cancel the visa, they'll report. Me as absconding.

It's fairly standard for employers in Dubai to need the physical passport for visa cancellation, especially if you're not in the country to hand it over in person. The real risk here isn't just losing your passport in the mail, it's that you're giving up your only travel document without a guarantee they'll process things quickly. I'd suggest you get a written confirmation from them via email that they'll courier it back to you within a specific timeframe, and use a tracked service like Aramex or DHL with insurance. If they're reputable, it's usually fine, but if you're unsure, you can also check if they're willing to accept a notarized copy or work with the consulate instead.

Look into whether your employer is a PRO (Public Relations Officer) company or they handle visas in-house. If they're using a PRO service, that's actually more common and they handle this stuff daily, so your passport is just one of many they process. The bigger concern is timing. Some PROs hold passports for 2-3 weeks because they batch submissions with immigration. Ask them straight up how many working days they'll physically hold your passport, and get that in writing before you ship it. If they can't give you a straight answer, that's a red flag worth paying attention to.

honestly if they're threatening absconding already that's a bigger red flag than the passport thing. a decent employer would work with you on timing, not rush you into shipping your only ID across borders under pressure.

if you do send it, make sure you get a clear receipt from the courier showing the destination address matches what they gave you. some people have had their passports sit at a PRO's desk for weeks in tecom or barsha because the guy handling it was on leave. ask them if they're using amer or a typing center for the cancellation, cause those places usually process same day or next day if you pay a bit extra.

also check if your home country's consulate in dubai can do a temporary travel document if worst comes to worst. knowing that backup exists might make you less anxious about mailing it.

Dubai/Sharjah Road Scam?

I helped a guy stranded on the ring road, gave him a ride to Ras Al Khaima after he claimed to have lost his wallet. Turns out he was fine, just jumped out and vanished. Did I get played? damn u basically did a free taxi run to rak. thing is they usually target cars with a single guy driving & look for dubai plates so u look like u got somewhere to be. best move is roll ur window down like two inches, say u already called the cops for them & keep moving, dont even unlock the door

yeah that's a known one on e311 & the sharjah ring road, usually they wave you down near the adnoc or before the rta cameras claiming wallet got lifted. classic play is they ask for a lift to the next emirate then bail once you slow down, sometimes a second guy on a bike is tracking you. next time just call 999 or drop them at the nearest police point, don't let anyone in your car off the highway ngl

The RAK route is the tell. No one genuinely stranded on the ring road needs to get all the way to Ras Al Khaimah, that's a 90 minute drive. These guys work in pairs and the second car picks them up after they hop out, usually somewhere past the Al Sajaa junction or near the ADNOC on E311. If it happens again, tell them you'll drive them to the nearest police station and watch how fast the story changes.
