Hi! I have a Filipino passport and a resident of Sweden. I want to visit a friend in Dubai but the visa rules are so confusing.

I want to book my flights through Emirates but I will stay with a friend at her apartment during my stay. My issue is I don't want to hassle my friend into "sponsoring" me, so I want to apply for the tourist visa on my own. So my question is can I book a dummy hotel (free cancellation) for the visa and cancel it just before my trip? Will immigration check?

Help !! Any advice is appreciated.

honestly just book the dummy hotel with free cancellation, it's what most people do here. the immigration officers at Dubai airport rarely check your actual booking once you're in because they already processed your visa online. i've had friends from the philippines do this exact thing and they just say they're staying with a friend when asked at the counter

one thing though - make sure your dummy booking is from a legit site like booking.com or hotels.com with a real address in Dubai. some visa processors are picky about that. also your friend in Dubai can actually just send you an invitation letter and copy of her tenancy contract if she rents, that's a pretty low-hassle way to sponsor you without her needing to do much paperwork

just be careful with the dates - your dummy hotel needs to cover your entire stay or at least the first few days. and keep a copy of the free cancellation policy just in case anyone asks

Dubai/Sharjah Road Scam?

I helped a guy stranded on the ring road, gave him a ride to Ras Al Khaima after he claimed to have lost his wallet. Turns out he was fine, just jumped out and vanished. Did I get played? damn u basically did a free taxi run to rak. thing is they usually target cars with a single guy driving & look for dubai plates so u look like u got somewhere to be. best move is roll ur window down like two inches, say u already called the cops for them & keep moving, dont even unlock the door

yeah that's a known one on e311 & the sharjah ring road, usually they wave you down near the adnoc or before the rta cameras claiming wallet got lifted. classic play is they ask for a lift to the next emirate then bail once you slow down, sometimes a second guy on a bike is tracking you. next time just call 999 or drop them at the nearest police point, don't let anyone in your car off the highway ngl

The RAK route is the tell. No one genuinely stranded on the ring road needs to get all the way to Ras Al Khaimah, that's a 90 minute drive. These guys work in pairs and the second car picks them up after they hop out, usually somewhere past the Al Sajaa junction or near the ADNOC on E311. If it happens again, tell them you'll drive them to the nearest police station and watch how fast the story changes.
