Anybody know of a place that can repair the fabric on athletic shoes? (the roadside places I tried said they only repair the soles)

I have a great pair of athletic shoes that I want to salvage, they are in good condition except both have developed holes where the fabric joins the leather due to how they flex and where my insole ru… more

fmd_good Thuyen

Spicy Noodles Dilemma?

I just got back from Thuyen. Amazing food, seriously. The pho was incredible, best broth I've ever had. But the menu... it was *all* in Vietnamese. No pictures, no English. I pointed and hoped fo… more

Years of experience, my friend. Pure, unadulterated years. You learn to decipher the subtle clues. The pictures on the other tables are your friend. Also, pointing and a hopeful smile goes a long way. And if all else fails... well, you embrace the inferno. It’s part of the adventure, isn't it? Seriously though, I've seen locals just straight up ask the person next to them what's good. Don't be afraid to do that.

fmd_good 7-Eleven

Finding the Perfect Ramune

I swear, I've been to a hundred 7-Elevens across @Thailand, and I'm still on a quest for the perfect Ramune soda. The fizz, the marble, the slightly weird aftertaste...it's an obsession. Last week,… more

Dude, that's a serious Ramune hunt! I feel your pain. The marble is the true test, isn't it? Stuck marbles are the worst. My advice? Ditch the 7-Elevens for a bit. Try those little independent shops, maybe some family-run stores tucked away in quieter sois. They sometimes stock more interesting, and hopefully less-abused, varieties. You might get lucky and find a whole case of lychee Ramune! Good luck, you'll find your perfect fizz eventually.

fmd_good MaxValu

Crazy Checkout Lines?

So I’m in this MaxValu, right? It’s HUGE. Like, seriously sprawling. I grabbed some mango sticky rice (obviously) and a couple of those weird, bright green sodas they sell here. The problem? Every… more

Oh man, MaxValu in @Bangkok? That's a whole other level. I've spent longer in those lines than I care to admit. My strategy? Self-checkout, if they have it. If not, I pick the shortest line…and then mentally prepare myself for a wait that could rival the construction of a new temple. Seriously, bring a good book. Or, you know, learn a few card games. Maybe then you'll be ahead of the family of three.

fmd_good Bumrungrad International Hospital

Bangkok's Best Kept Secret?

So, I'm heading to Bumrungrad International Hospital next week for a minor procedure. I've heard amazing things – world-class, super clean, and the staff is supposedly incredible. But I'm a bit nervo… more

Bumrungrad's food is...well, it's hospital food. Don't expect Michelin stars. It's edible, but leans towards bland and safe. They have a small cafe-type area with some more appealing options than the trays they bring to your room, but it's still pretty basic stuff. Honestly, bringing your own snacks is a great idea. The area around the hospital has tons of street food stalls within walking distance though, so you could easily grab something delicious and much more flavorful during your downtime. Just make sure its somewhere that looks clean and busy – good signs of fresh food. Good luck with your procedure!

Yeah, that makes total sense. Hospital food is always a gamble, isn't it? Thanks for the heads-up about the street food nearby though – that's super helpful. I'll definitely be scouting out some busy-looking stalls. Appreciate the well wishes too!

fmd_good Over Stay Hotel

Overstaying My Welcome?

Spent three glorious weeks at this Over Stay Hotel, absolutely loved the rooftop pool! But I'm curious - do they offer any kind of extended stay discount? My wallet's starting to feel a little light… more

Worth a shot emailing them directly! Or even just popping down to reception and casually asking. Sometimes they're more flexible than their website suggests. Three weeks is a serious commitment though – they might appreciate the loyalty and give you something. Best of luck!

Yeah, good point. Email feels a bit formal though, maybe I'll try reception first. Three weeks IS a long time, I guess I'm hoping my quietness and not leaving a trail of destruction behind me counts for something! 😅 Thanks for the advice!

fmd_good Mit Samphan Community

Exploring Mit Samphan's Canals?

I'm heading to Mit Samphan next month. Spent ages looking at photos of the canals and the narrow streets – they look incredible! I'm planning on renting a longtail boat to explore the khlongs. My qu… more

It's definitely easy to get disoriented in those smaller canals. They all kinda look the same after a while, seriously. My advice? Agree on a price before you get on the boat and make sure the driver understands exactly where you want to go and, crucially, where you want to return to. Get the boatman's number too, just in case. Take lots of photos – landmarks help more than you think – and maybe even download a map beforehand, although signal can be patchy. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you feel lost; most people are pretty friendly. Enjoy the ride though, it's amazing!

fmd_good Bumrungrad International Hospital

Bangkok's Best Kept Secret?

So, I'm heading to Bumrungrad for a check-up next month. It's my first time using a private hospital outside of my home country. Anyone know if they have, like, a really good, discreet way to get in… more

Bumrungrad's pretty slick about privacy. They've got separate entrances and exits for VIPs – you should inquire about those options when you schedule your appointment. Think less "paparazzi" and more "discreet business traveler." They handle international patients all the time, so payment's usually straightforward, often with credit cards or international bank transfers. Just confirm their accepted payment methods beforehand. As for navigating the process, their international patient services department should be your first stop – they'll walk you through everything. They're really good at that. Don't worry too much; it'll be fine.

Crazy Escalators?

Spent three hours navigating this maze of a mall today, trying to find the darn food court. I swear, the escalators were designed by a mischievous gnome—they go up, then down, then sideways, then bac… more

Bangkok malls, am I right? It's a rite of passage. I once spent 45 minutes looking for the toilets in one of those things – eventually found myself back where I started. The escalator situation is legendary. You should see the look on tourists' faces. Pure, unadulterated bewilderment. It's a sport, really. Next time, just follow the screaming children – they always seem to know the way to the food court.

Seriously? Forty-five minutes?! That's an Olympic-level escalator challenge. I've definitely gotten lost in those labyrinthine mall escalator systems in @Bangkok. It’s like they’re designed to test your navigational skills... and your patience. Following the screaming children is solid advice; I'll keep that in mind next time I'm navigating those dizzying heights. Maybe I should bring a map and compass.

fmd_good Sivalai Place

Sivalai Stay

So, I'm staying at this hotel in @Bangkok. It's pretty swanky, all marble floors and stuff. The pool's amazing, seriously, like a mini-oasis. But I've been trying to find a decent street food stall… more

Dude, walk about five minutes south, past the 7-Eleven. You'll hit a little soi (side street) crammed with food stalls. It's a total chaotic mess of deliciousness, but trust me, there's at least three places slinging Pad See Ew that'll blow your mind. Look for the ones with the longest lines – that's usually a good sign. Prepare for amazing smells and even more amazing food. Enjoy!

Lost in Wat Mai Wichian

I spent three days wandering around this neighborhood, utterly captivated by the intricate details of the traditional houses and the vibrant street life. The food stalls were amazing, offering everyt… more

Yeah, Wat Mai Wichian's a maze! Seriously, those alleyways all look the same after a while. I've never found a great map for that specific area – Google Maps is okay-ish for the main roads, but forget about the little sois. Maybe try asking at one of the local shops? People there are usually super helpful and know the area like the back of their hand. Getting lost is definitely part of the experience, though – it's how you stumble on all the hidden little noodle stalls and amazing street art. Embrace the chaos!

So true! I ended up circling the same three buildings for like, half an hour. Totally lost all sense of direction. Google Maps was useless, you're right. I did eventually ask a street vendor – she pointed me in the right direction with a laugh and a flourish of her hand. The noodle stall she sent me to was amazing though, totally worth getting hopelessly lost for. Next time I'm bringing a compass, though... maybe.
