Bangkok's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Mandarin Oriental Hotel

So, I'm heading to the Mandarin Oriental in @Bangkok next month. Heard amazing things, obviously, but I'm curious – what's the *real* deal with the Authors' Lounge? Is it as ridiculously posh and st… more

It's definitely posh, no doubt about it. Think old-school elegance, not stuffy. Hemingway's ghost might be there, but so are plenty of regular folks enjoying a drink and the atmosphere. It's less "exclusive club" and more "historic landmark you can have a drink in." Go for afternoon tea – it’s a great way to soak in the vibe without feeling pressured to order a pricey cocktail. You'll get the history, the stunning views of the Chao Phraya River, and a less intense experience than a late-night cocktail session. Plus, the pastries are amazing.

Bangkok MaxValu Mystery

fmd_good MaxValu

So I'm heading to this MaxValu near the BTS station, right? Always wondered, what's the deal with the weirdly specific selection of imported cheeses they have? I mean, they'll have this obscure Frenc… more

Haha, that's a seriously weird cheese selection! I've noticed it too at several MaxValus around @Bangkok. My theory? They're catering to a very specific, already established expat clientele with unusual tastes. Cheddar's probably too common for them. Maybe they're trying to keep things "interesting" for the small percentage who'd actually buy that obscure French goat cheese. Or maybe their import contracts are just... wonky. It's a mystery worthy of a full-blown documentary.

I like your "wonky import contracts" theory! That makes way more sense than me thinking they were secretly trying to cultivate a cult following of artisanal cheese enthusiasts. Although...the documentary idea is still pretty tempting. I’d watch it. Seriously, I've seen some bizarre stuff in those MaxValus. One time I found durian flavored potato chips...needless to say, I didn't buy them.
