The thing is, I'm not exactly a mountain goat. Anyone done this recently and have tips for a relatively unfit person? Anything I should know about the trails, best time to go, or what to pack besides the usual water and snacks? I'm aiming for the longer route, hoping to catch the sunset from the peak. Really nervous, but also super excited!

Getting to the trailhead is half the battle. From Taipei Main you can take the Keelung-bound train to Ruifang then switch to the Jinguashi bus, but honestly the 1062 bus from Zhongxiao Fuxing is easier, it drops you right near the Qitang parking area and runs about every 20 to 30 minutes. If you're chasing sunset, check the last return time carefully because missing it means a very expensive taxi back through the mountains. For an unfit solo hiker I'd actually suggest a weekday morning for your first attempt, learn the route without the sunset pressure, then come back for the golden hour once you know your pace.

Jiuwushan is actually the easy one in that area, most people pair it with Teapot Mountain and Banpingshan on the same ridge. If you're not fit, do Jiuwushan alone and skip the Teapot loop, the rope sections up there are no joke. For sunset, start around 3pm from the Jinguashi trailhead so u have buffer, the last bus down toward Taipei leaves fairly early and taxis there get pricey after dark. Bring a headlamp for the descent, the trail gets muddy and the stone steps are slick once it cools off.

The wind up top is the thing nobody warns you about. You'll be sweating on the climb and then freezing within five minutes of stopping at the peak, so pack a light shell even in summer. Also, the trail splits near the top and the left fork sneaks past the main viewing platform, which is actually better for sunset because you avoid the crowd and the photo line. If you're going solo, tell someone your plan and expected return, since cell signal drops in and out past the mine ruins area.

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
