Zhongzheng's Hidden Lanes?

The temples were breathtaking, the night markets buzzing with energy... but I got hopelessly lost in those tiny alleyways more than once! Seriously, some of those side streets felt like secret passages, completely unmarked. My question is: are there any local maps or guides that highlight these hidden lanes, maybe with stories about their history or the shops tucked away within them? I'd love to explore more confidently next time.

Honestly, just ask a shopkeeper or an old guy sitting outside. They love telling stories about the lanes if you buy a drink or a snack. I found out about a hidden temple courtyard that way, no map in the world would show it

You won't find a single map for those lanes, but the Taipei City Archives has a cool old map collection online that shows how the alley networks evolved from Japanese-era layouts. For stories, pick up a copy of "Taipei: A City of Stories" at the National Taiwan Museum gift shop; it breaks down specific blocks like the area around Nanmen Market. Locals tend to just know these paths by walking them, so try joining a free walking tour from Meetup Taipei, which often goes through Zhongzheng's backstreets and explains the shophouse history.

tbh the best guide is just Google Maps with the satellite view turned on, you can see the actual alley layouts that way. Also the Zhongzheng District office has these little walking route pamphlets at the visitor info desk near Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, they're free and cover like 4 or 5 different themed paths through the old lanes

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
