The air was so clean, felt like a million miles from the city. Found some amazing little tea houses tucked away, seriously, felt like I stumbled onto a secret world. But I got completely lost on one of the less-marked trails. Seriously lost. Eventually found my way back but...man. Anyone got a good map or app that shows all the trails in Xiatayou? Those less-trodden paths are tempting, but I'd prefer not to get eaten by mosquitos again.

Yeah the trail marking is rough once you leave the main paths. I use Gaia GPS for Xiatayou, it's got better coverage of the old forestry roads than AllTrails. The key is downloading the satellite layer before you go, that's how you spot the really faint paths that don't show on the standard maps. If you're heading up toward the ridge above the tea houses, there's a hidden spring about 20 minutes off the main trail that the paper maps miss entirely. And for the mosquitos, the local shop near the bus stop sells this green bottle of repellent that works way better than anything I've brought from the city.

there's a facebook group called xiatayou trail runners that posts gpx files of less-marked routes. saved my ass when i wanted to find that abandoned shrine past the third tea house without wandering into a bamboo maze

honestly the trails around Xiatayou are pretty poorly marked once you get off the main ones. most people just use AllTrails but it misses a lot of the smaller paths. i'd grab a paper map from the visitor center near the old tea factory, that one actually shows the old logging routes that aren't on any app. also if you're going off trail bring a gps tracker or at least download maps.me offline, cell signal dies fast once you drop into the valleys. the mosquitos are brutal near the creek beds around 4pm, that's when i always head back up to the ridge

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
