The street was almost deserted, but there was this incredible scent of something sweet and spicy hanging in the air...almost like star anise and something fruity? I couldn't find where it was coming from. Every shop was closed. It was totally enchanting, but frustrating! Anyone know what that amazing smell was? I'm dying to go back and track it down.

honestly that sounds like one of the late-night 燒烤 (bbq) spots that do skewers after midnight. there's a tiny hole-in-the-wall joint on mingshui near lane 97 that grills everything with a sweet soy glaze and star anise, the smell lingers for blocks even after they close. if u go back around 1am you'll prob see a guy with a cart and a red lantern, that's the one. the fruity note might be from their pineapple pork skewers, they marinate them overnight and the charred sugar gets real fragrant

oh i bet it's the dried fruit and spice shop on mingshui near the jinshan intersection. they've been there like 40 years and they do all their roasting and drying at night when the power's cheaper. the sweet-fruity smell is probably their smoked plums or dried persimmons, they use star anise and cassia bark in the curing mix. if you go back around 10pm on a weekday you'll see light coming from the basement vents, that's where they run the big ovens. the owner's a quiet old guy who'll let you watch if you ask nicely

yeah that area has a few late-night spice shops that do their roasting after hours. there's a place near the corner of mingshui and nong'an that makes 滷味 (braised snacks) with a ton of star anise and five-spice powder, they might leave the big pots simmering overnight. also possible it's from one of the dessert shops that uses dried longan or red dates in their soups, that sweet-fruity note could be from those. next time walk toward the zhongshan intersection end around 11pm, the scent gets stronger near the old herbal tea stall that's been there for decades

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
