So I finally went to Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market, right? The sheer scale of the place was insane. The sheer scale of the place was insane. I'd seen pictures, but nothing prepared me for the sensory overload, the smells, the sounds, the sheer volume of fish! I managed to snag some incredibly fresh tuna for practically nothing, but then the fun began. Trying to navigate the payment system, which seemed entirely reliant on cash and a bunch of hand gestures I didn't understand, was a nightmare. I ended up paying way more than I should of for some bizarre side dish no one explained. Seriously, what was that seaweed thing?! My question is: is there a less chaotic way to experience the market without getting completely ripped off by enthusiastic vendors? I want that fresh seafood, but not the headache.

Yeah, Noryangjin is a vibe. It's amazing and terrifying all at once. Honestly, going early in the morning, before the biggest crowds, might help. You'll probably still deal with some chaos, but less of the "everyone's trying to sell you everything at once" feeling. Also, try to learn a few basic Korean phrases related to prices and payment. Even pointing at something and saying "얼마예요?" (eolmaeyeyo? - how much is it?) can help. And for goodness sake, only buy what you understand. If you have no idea what it is, don't buy it! That seaweed thing...yeah, I've got no clue either. Lesson learned, I guess.

So true! The sheer volume of everything is overwhelming. I went around midday and it was sensory overload. I ended up just getting some pre-packaged stuff because I was too intimidated to even try ordering anything fresh. Your tip about learning a few phrases is gold, I'll definitely do that next time. And yeah, that mystery seaweed... I think I saw that too! Definitely sticking to the things I recognize next time. Thanks for the advice!

honestly the guide nailed most of it but i gotta shout out the ssamgyeopsal at samwon garden in apgujeong. it's pricier than mapo alley but the pork belly is thick cut and they grill it over charcoal which makes a huge difference. also if you're at gwangjang market don't skip the mayak gimbap, it's those tiny seaweed rolls with carrot and spinach, three bucks for a tray and they're dangerously addictive

one thing the guide missed is sundae (korean blood sausage) at the gwangjang market stall near the main entrance. it's like 3,000 won and they serve it with salt and peppers, really underrated street food. also for the bamdokkaebi night market try to go on a friday when there's more food trucks, saturdays get packed with families and the lines get ridiculous
