Hello /r/seoul

I'm a backpacker who travels for already quite a while and I noticed that I have to renew my passport if I want to continue. I plan to do it in SK and spend some time gaming again as I didn't do it for over a year now and it doesn't hurt to just spend time by myself for a while again.

I'm now searching for a budget way to do that for 2-4 weeks until I get my new passport. I could easily sleep in a hostel and go to a PC Bang during the day but I want to ask if there are even better options. I heard that some hotels/motels have quite decent PC setups.

I'm willing to spend around 40$ a day as I could sleep in a hostel for 17$ a night and 12$-15$ for a PC bang a day. I don't need the biggest luxury as long as it is relatively clean.

I also heard that there are Goshiwons equipped with exactly that but I have no experience with those and how easy it is to rent those.

I'll get a korean SIM and plan to play mainly games like BG3, Skyrim or Elden Ring so ping shouldn't be an issue.

another option is to look into "office hotels" or "residence hotels" near digital media city station. theyre not glamorous but some have decent desks and ethernet ports, and you can find them for around 30-35 a night if you book for a full week. the rooms are small but private and cleaner than most goshiwons

for pc bangs, id skip the touristy ones in hongdae and head to the ones near konkuk university or sagajeong. the rates are usually 1,000 won per hour but they have loyalty cards where every 10 hours you get 2 free. plus the food menu is way better, some even have fried rice or dumplings for 3,000 won

if you do stick with hostel and pc bang, grab a t-money card for the subway. hopping between a cheap hostel in sindorim and a pc bang in gwangmyeong could save you a few thousand won a day vs staying central. the trains run late too so you wont feel rushed

honestly the hostel + pc bang combo is your best bet, but look into jjimjilbangs too. some of them have gaming zones built in and you can sleep in the sauna areas for like 10-15k won a night. not the most private but clean and you get a uniform, a towel, and free shower stuff

for pc bangs check out the ones in jongno or near yonsei university. they're cheaper than hongdae tourist spots and some have 24-hour flat rates around 15,000 won. just ask for "24si jeong-ak" at the counter

goshiwons are a gamble. most are tiny rooms with a bed and a desk that barely fits a laptop. you'd need to find one specifically marketed as a "gaming goshiwon" and those are rare outside of gangnam area which is pricier

honestly 40 a day is plenty if you stick to hostel dorms and bulk pc bang passes. spend the extra on good kimbap from the convenience store, not the pc bang ramyun. those noodles are overpriced for what they are

Your budget is pretty realistic for this plan. The goshiwon route could work but most of them have barebones desks and laptops, not proper gaming rigs. I'd stick with the hostel and PC bang combo, especially if you find a place near Hongdae or Sinchon where PC bangs are everywhere and cheap.

For PC bangs, you can usually get a 10-hour pass for around 10,000 won (about $7.50) if you buy in bulk, which is way cheaper than paying hourly. Some places near universities offer monthly memberships too. Just check that the hostel has decent WiFi for when you want to play single-player games in bed.

If you want to save on food, most PC bangs have instant ramyun and drinks for like $1-2, but I'd grab kimbap from a convenience store instead. The hostel breakfast situation in Seoul is usually just toast and jam, so plan accordingly.

🏠 Affordable Accommodation
Stay in guesthouses or hostels in Hongdae or Myeongdong for as low as 20,000-40,000 won per night. For a private room, try a goshiwon (student housing) starting at 300,000 won per month. Book directly with the property or use local platforms like Yanolja for discounts.

🍜 Cheap Eats
A bowl of bibimbap or kimchi jjigae at a local restaurant costs 6,000-8,000 won. For budget meals, visit convenience stores like GS25 or CU for triangle kimbap (1,200 won) and instant ramen. Street food like tteokbokki (3,000 won) is filling and cheap.

🚇 Transportation Savings
Use a T-money card for subway and bus rides at 1,400 won per trip, with free transfers within 30 minutes. A day pass costs 5,500 won for unlimited rides. Walk between nearby attractions like Gyeongbokgung and Insadong to save even more.

🎫 Free Attractions
Many palaces, including Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, offer free admission on the last Wednesday of each month. Cheonggyecheon Stream and Namsan Park are always free to explore. Visit Bukchon Hanok Village for a glimpse of traditional Seoul without spending a won.

💰 Local Money-Saving Tips
Locals often use apps like Coupang Eats for discounted meal deliveries or visit traditional markets like Gwangjang Market for cheap, fresh food. Avoid tourist-heavy areas for souvenirs; instead, shop at Daiso for affordable Korean snacks and gifts.

🎭 Free Cultural Experiences
Watch a free traditional performance at the Korea House or at the Namsangol Hanok Village on weekends. Many museums, like the National Museum of Korea, have free permanent exhibitions. Check out Hongdae street performances for live music and dance.

🍺 Nightlife on a Budget
Join a free walking tour of Hongdae or Itaewon to discover cheap bars and pubs. Many places offer happy hour deals from 5-7 PM with 50% off drinks. For a unique experience, visit a pojangmacha (street tent bar) for soju and anju under 10,000 won.

📱 Essential Apps
Download Naver Map for accurate transit directions and KakaoTaxi for affordable rides. Use Mango Plate to find restaurant discounts and coupons. For free Wi-Fi, connect to the city's public network at subway stations and parks.
Become a Local Guide in Seoul to earn up to $50.00/hour by helping travelers that are interested in Seoul and want to connect to learn about the current climate, discover hidden gems, or get help planning their itinerary.

this is a solid list, one thing i'd add is that the t-money card also works for the airport railroad express (arex) and you can get a discount if you buy a "climate card" from the subway machines for like 62,000 won a month, unlimited rides on seoul metro and buses. also, for free stuff, the seoul city wall hiking trail from naksan park gives you amazing views of the city and bukchon without paying a thing, plus it's way less crowded than namsan. gwangjang market is great but go for the sundubu (7000 won) at the stalls in the back, not the front ones near the entrance which are pricier for tourists

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

honestly the guide nails it, one thing i'd add is that the t-money card deposit is refundable at any convenience store when you leave, most people forget and just toss it. also for free stuff, the seoul philharmonic does free outdoor concerts at seoul plaza in spring and fall, just show up with a blanket. if you're near hongdae on a friday night, the playground area has buskers that are genuinely talented, way better than the overhyped clubs

i live here and a few things this guide nails. one tip that saves me money is the "climate card" for 62,000 won a month, unlimited subway and bus, even works on the airport express if you're staying a while. for cheap eats, skip the main streets in hongdae and go into the alleys behind the art center, there's a place that does dwaeji gukbap (pork soup) for 7,000 won and it's way better than the tourist spots. also, the seoul city wall trail from naksan park is free and gives you killer views without the namsan tower price tag, way less crowded too
