Solo Trip to Seoul for 1 Week (26 y/o male) - Should I Cancel my Accommodation in Hongdae & Stay in Itaewon / Gangnam?

Hi, so I'll be in Seoul for 1 week at the beginning of April and have booked my accommodation at a decently rated hostel in Hongdae with the hopes to meet some cool people, have a good time, and more… Hi, so I'll be in Seoul for 1 week at the beginning of April and have booked my accommodation at a decently rated hostel in Hongdae with the hopes to meet some cool people, have a good time, and more importantly, explore the nightlife!

However, having briefly researched the nightlife and clubbing scene, I'm now slightly put off by the (from what I've read online) strict age limits at clubs, specifically in Hongdae, and I'm wondering whether I should cancel my hostel reservation and book at another one in Itaweon or Gangnam (as those districts are supposedly more lax with the club age limits?).

Obviously the last thing I want is to be in a group of people enjoying a night out only to be turned away from a club and have a dampener on the night just for being over 25. I like techno and underground clubs and again from my limited research am slightly relieved that the clubs in that scene don't seem to have much of an issue regarding age, but at the same time, I would also like to check out the scene in Honddae as well. A potential counter is that I dress well and could still potentially pass for early 20s if bouncers aren't checking for ID.

I suppose worst case scenario I know the nightly transportation in Seoul is good, so could hop on a bus to Itaweon or Gandnam, but that still wouldn't exactly be ideal if I'm having to solo off to other districts after getting turned away from a club. Any advice any locals can give here? Is it worth staying in Hongdae for a single 26 y/o male looking to party or will I be in for disappointment?

Cheers!

(don't know if I'm catastrophising about this, but after a year and a half in a country with some fairly underwhelming nightlife and lack of partying culture, I really want to make the most out of this trip and have a blast, as I know Seoul is supposed to have a pretty awesome nightlife scene)

honestly the age thing is more of a problem at the big commercial clubs near hongdae station like nb2 or arena, not the smaller spots you'd actually want for techno. at 26 you'll be fine at places like volnost or strange fruit, they don't really care as long as you're not causing trouble

if you're set on underground music, keep your hongdae hostel but spend your nights around hapjeong or sangsu instead. it's literally a 10 minute walk or a 1,000 won bus ride from hongdae. the area around mapo-gu office station has some solid warehouse style parties too, check out do or die on instagram for pop up events

gangnam would be a waste of time for you, those clubs are mostly about looking expensive and spending 50,000 won on a bottle of soju. itaewon has a few decent spots like pistil but honestly the scene there has been kinda dead since the halloween crowd changed things up. you're better off staying put and just walking east from hongdae when you want proper music

The age thing is real but mostly at the big commercial clubs in Hongdae, not the smaller spots. If you're into techno and underground, check out the area around Sangsu station which is one stop from Hongdae and has places like Volnost and Dillinger that don't card anyone over 25. Your Hongdae hostel is fine for meeting people, just walk or take the 15 minute taxi to Sangsu when you want proper music.

Taxis between Hongdae and Itaewon run about 10,000 won and take 15-20 minutes unless it's peak hours. Gangnam is further and the clubs there are mostly bottle service and dress code nonsense, so I'd skip it entirely for your vibe. Keep your booking and use Hongdae as a base to explore the Hapjeong/Sangsu corridor.

You're overthinking the age thing a bit. Hongdae clubs do have a younger crowd on average, but at 26 you won't get turned away from most places unless you look noticeably older. The bigger issue is that Hongdae skews toward pop and EDM, not techno or underground sounds.

For the music you're into, you'd be better off based near Itaewon or around Hapjeong/Sangsu, which is still close to Hongdae but has more of the underground scene. Check out venues like Vurt or Strange Fruit in that corridor. The subway runs until midnight and taxis between those areas are cheap, so moving around isn't a big ordeal even if you're solo.

Keep the Hongdae hostel for the social aspect and just hop over to Hapjeong or Itaewon when you want proper techno nights. You'll have a better mix that way than planting yourself in Gangnam, which is more bottle service and mainstream clubs.

🏠 Affordable Accommodation
Stay in guesthouses or hostels in Hongdae or Myeongdong for as low as 20,000-40,000 won per night. For a private room, try a goshiwon (student housing) starting at 300,000 won per month. Book directly with the property or use local platforms like Yanolja for discounts.

🍜 Cheap Eats
A bowl of bibimbap or kimchi jjigae at a local restaurant costs 6,000-8,000 won. For budget meals, visit convenience stores like GS25 or CU for triangle kimbap (1,200 won) and instant ramen. Street food like tteokbokki (3,000 won) is filling and cheap.

🚇 Transportation Savings
Use a T-money card for subway and bus rides at 1,400 won per trip, with free transfers within 30 minutes. A day pass costs 5,500 won for unlimited rides. Walk between nearby attractions like Gyeongbokgung and Insadong to save even more.

🎫 Free Attractions
Many palaces, including Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, offer free admission on the last Wednesday of each month. Cheonggyecheon Stream and Namsan Park are always free to explore. Visit Bukchon Hanok Village for a glimpse of traditional Seoul without spending a won.

💰 Local Money-Saving Tips
Locals often use apps like Coupang Eats for discounted meal deliveries or visit traditional markets like Gwangjang Market for cheap, fresh food. Avoid tourist-heavy areas for souvenirs; instead, shop at Daiso for affordable Korean snacks and gifts.

🎭 Free Cultural Experiences
Watch a free traditional performance at the Korea House or at the Namsangol Hanok Village on weekends. Many museums, like the National Museum of Korea, have free permanent exhibitions. Check out Hongdae street performances for live music and dance.

🍺 Nightlife on a Budget
Join a free walking tour of Hongdae or Itaewon to discover cheap bars and pubs. Many places offer happy hour deals from 5-7 PM with 50% off drinks. For a unique experience, visit a pojangmacha (street tent bar) for soju and anju under 10,000 won.

📱 Essential Apps
Download Naver Map for accurate transit directions and KakaoTaxi for affordable rides. Use Mango Plate to find restaurant discounts and coupons. For free Wi-Fi, connect to the city's public network at subway stations and parks.

this is a solid list, one thing i'd add is that the t-money card also works for the airport railroad express (arex) and you can get a discount if you buy a "climate card" from the subway machines for like 62,000 won a month, unlimited rides on seoul metro and buses. also, for free stuff, the seoul city wall hiking trail from naksan park gives you amazing views of the city and bukchon without paying a thing, plus it's way less crowded than namsan. gwangjang market is great but go for the sundubu (7000 won) at the stalls in the back, not the front ones near the entrance which are pricier for tourists

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

honestly the guide nails it, one thing i'd add is that the t-money card deposit is refundable at any convenience store when you leave, most people forget and just toss it. also for free stuff, the seoul philharmonic does free outdoor concerts at seoul plaza in spring and fall, just show up with a blanket. if you're near hongdae on a friday night, the playground area has buskers that are genuinely talented, way better than the overhyped clubs

i live here and a few things this guide nails. one tip that saves me money is the "climate card" for 62,000 won a month, unlimited subway and bus, even works on the airport express if you're staying a while. for cheap eats, skip the main streets in hongdae and go into the alleys behind the art center, there's a place that does dwaeji gukbap (pork soup) for 7,000 won and it's way better than the tourist spots. also, the seoul city wall trail from naksan park is free and gives you killer views without the namsan tower price tag, way less crowded too
