🌊 Day 1 Morning: Beachfront
Start your day at 7:30 AM with a walk along the Golden Mile promenade from uShaka Beach to North Beach. Grab breakfast at Circus Circus Beach Cafe (Shop 1, 99 Marine Parade) for around R80, open from 7:00 AM. Then visit uShaka Marine World (1 King Shaka Avenue) when it opens at 9:00 AM; tickets cost about R200 for the aquarium. Allow two hours to see the dolphin show and shark tank.

πŸ›οΈ Day 1 Afternoon: City Center
Take a 15-minute taxi or e-hailing ride (about R60) from the beachfront to the Durban City Hall (263 Church Street) to admire the Edwardian architecture. From there, walk five minutes to the Kwa Muhle Museum (130 Bram Fischer Road) to learn about apartheid-era pass laws; entry is free and it's open until 4:30 PM. For lunch, try the Bunny Chow at House of Curries (275 Florida Road) for around R70, a 10-minute drive away.

🌿 Day 1 Evening: Florida Road
Spend the late afternoon browsing the independent shops along Florida Road, then head to the Durban Botanic Gardens (9 John Zikhali Road) before it closes at 5:30 PM; entry is free. As evening falls, choose from a range of restaurants on Florida Road such as Spiga d'Oro (200 Florida Road) for pasta (mains R120-R180). End with a nightcap at The Chairman (146 Mahatma Gandhi Road), a popular jazz bar that opens at 8:00 PM.

🦁 Day 2 Morning: Umhlanga
Catch an e-hailing ride or bus to Umhlanga Rocks, about 20 minutes north of central Durban (R100-R150 by e-hailing). Start at the Umhlanga Lighthouse and Whalebone Pier for photos, then walk the 1 km promenade to Bronze Beach. Have a late breakfast at The Oyster Box (2 Lighthouse Road) if you want a splurge, or grab a coffee and pastry at Starbucks (1 Ncondo Place) for under R50.

πŸ›οΈ Day 2 Afternoon: Gateway
After Umhlanga, take a 10-minute taxi to Gateway Theatre of Shopping (1 Palm Boulevard) for lunch at the food court (meals from R60) and some indoor entertainment like the cinema or iFly. If you prefer nature, drive 15 minutes to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve (open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, entry R30) for a short boardwalk trail. Return to Durban central by 5:00 PM to avoid peak traffic.

πŸ› Day 2 Evening: Curry Mile
Head to the Indian Quarter on Victoria Street for an authentic Durban curry experience. Try Brittania Hotel (129 Victoria Street) for its famous mutton curry and roti, open until 9:30 PM, with meals around R90. Afterwards, visit the nearby Victoria Street Market (151 Victoria Street) if it's still open (closes at 6:00 PM) for spices and souvenirs. For a nightcap, the Riviera Hotel (Lower Marine Parade) has a bar with ocean views.

🎨 Day 3 Morning: Berea
Explore the Berea neighborhood, starting at the Durban Art Gallery (2nd Floor, City Hall, 263 Church Street) which opens at 8:30 AM and is free. Then walk 10 minutes to the Old Court House Museum (77 Samora Machel Street) to see local history exhibits. For a mid-morning snack, stop at The Coffee Tree (275 Florida Road) for a cappuccino and cake (R50).

🚑 Day 3 Afternoon: Moses Mabhida
Take a 10-minute taxi to Moses Mabhida Stadium (44 Isaiah Ntshangase Road) and ride the SkyCar to the top for panoramic views (R80 per person, open 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM). If you're adventurous, try the Big Rush Big Swing (R695) which operates from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Lunch at the stadium's cafΓ© or nearby Suncoast Casino (1 Battery Beach Road) for a variety of options.

πŸŒ… Day 3 Evening: Sunset Cruise
Book a sunset cruise at Wilson's Wharf (3 Boatmans Road) with companies like Durban Harbour Cruises; trips last 1.5 hours and cost around R250, departing at 5:00 PM. After the cruise, dine at the wharf's restaurants such as Mozambik (Wilson's Wharf) for peri-peri chicken (mains R110-R160). End your trip with a stroll along the Point Waterfront promenade before heading back to your accommodation.

nice itinerary, you clearly did your homework. one thing though, day 3 sunset cruise timing is tight, most of those Wilson's Wharf boats leave closer to 5:30 in summer and you need to be there 30 min early for boarding, so dont cut it close with the Moses Mabhida stuff. also for the SkyCar, go early morning if u can, by 11am the queue gets long and the glass gets hot and hazy so your photos come out kak. and fwiw the Point promenade after dark is fine but stick to the lit section near the hotels, not the quiet stretch past the old pier.

solid writeup, covers most of the bases. one thing id add for day 1, circus circus is great but if u want proper durban breakfast just walk 5 min to the beachfront spur or grab a masala omelette at sunrise bakery on marine parade, way cheaper & locals actually eat there. also the chairman is cool but dress code is strict, no slops or beachwear, i saw guys get turned away at the door lol. for day 2 evening, brittania is legendary but go before 7 otherwise the queue is insane & they sometimes run out of roti

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

good effort on this, u clearly mapped it out proper. one thing i'd flag, day 2 curry mile bit, brittania is good but honestly the better move is to walk a few blocks to House of Curries on Florida or just hit Gounden's in the CBD for a proper local bunny. also the Victoria Street Market closes earlier than stated on some days, closer to 5 and sundays it's basically dead by 3, so dont bank on it for souvenirs. and the Wilson's Wharf cruise, book the day before not same day, they sell out fast

πŸ–οΈ Golden Mile Beachfront
The Golden Mile stretches from uShaka Marine World to the Suncoast Casino, and it's where Durban's beach culture comes alive. Start at North Beach for a morning swim in the warm Indian Ocean, then walk south along the promenade to watch the surfers at Bay of Plenty. In 2026, the city has added more shaded seating and outdoor gym equipment along the route, making it even easier to spend a full day here. Lifeguards are on duty from 6am to 6pm, and the beach is safest between the flags.

🐠 uShaka Marine World
uShaka Marine World on King Shaka Avenue is Africa's largest marine theme park, and it's worth a full day. The aquarium is built inside a wrecked ship, and you can walk through the hull while sharks and rays glide overhead. Tickets cost around R250 for adults and R180 for children in 2026, with combo deals for the water park and Sea World. Go early on weekdays to avoid school groups, and don't miss the dolphin show at 11am and 2pm.

🌿 Durban Botanic Gardens
The Durban Botanic Gardens on Sydenham Road is the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa, dating back to 1849. It's free to enter, though donations are welcome, and it's open daily from 7:30am to 5:45pm. The orchid house and the cycad collection are highlights, and the tea garden serves a mean scone. On the last Sunday of each month, there's a craft and food market from 9am to 2pm.

πŸ› Bunny Chow Trail
No visit to Durban is complete without trying bunny chow, a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry. Head to the original Gounden's in the Warwick Avenue area for a mutton bunny that's been perfected over generations. For a slightly more modern take, try House of Curries on Florida Road, where you can get a quarter loaf for around R70. Most places serve from 11am to 9pm, but go before 1pm to beat the lunch rush.

🚑 Moses Mabhida Stadium
Moses Mabhida Stadium in Stamford Hill is an architectural icon, and you can ride the SkyCar to the top of the arch for panoramic views of the city and ocean. The SkyCar costs R80 for adults and R40 for children, and it runs from 9am to 6pm daily. For adrenaline seekers, the Big Rush Big Swing lets you jump from the arch, a 220-meter high swing that's one of the world's tallest. Book online to skip the queues, especially on weekends.

🎨 Florida Road Vibes
Florida Road in Morningside is Durban's trendiest street, lined with cafes, art galleries, and boutique shops. Start with breakfast at Freedom Cafe, then browse the African Art Centre for local crafts. In the evening, the street comes alive with bars and restaurants, and you'll find everything from tapas to Thai food. Parking is limited, so use the secure lots off Windermere Road for around R20 per hour.

⛰️ Umhlanga Rocks
Just 20 minutes north of Durban, Umhlanga Rocks offers a quieter beach experience with a beautiful lighthouse and a protected tidal pool. The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve has a boardwalk through coastal forest, perfect for birdwatching. For a meal with a view, the Oyster Box Hotel serves a famous curry buffet, but book ahead. The beach is shark-netted, so swimming is safe, and lifeguards are on duty from 7am to 5pm.

πŸ›οΈ Victoria Street Market
Victoria Street Market in the Indian Quarter is a sensory overload of spices, fabrics, and curios. It's the best place to buy authentic Durban curry powder, samosas, and beaded jewelry. The market is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and until 2pm on Sunday. Be prepared to haggle, and bring cash as many stalls don't accept cards. It's a short walk from the Workshop shopping center, so you can combine both in one trip.

The list covers the big names well but I'd flag the timing on uShaka. The dolphin show is decent, but the real move is getting there when the gates open at 9am and doing the aquarium first while it's still quiet, then hitting the water park after 11 when the school groups have moved on. Also the combo ticket is only worth it if you're actually doing both, a lot of people buy it and then run out of steam by 2pm.

On the Botanic Gardens, seconding the scone but add that the orchid house closes earlier than the main garden, around 4:15pm if I remember right, so don't leave it for the end of the day.

arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

good list, the SkyCar at Moses Mabhida is worth it just for the view on a clear day. one thing i'd add for anyone doing the stadium, the People's Park next door has a nice picnic spot & you can watch the arch light up after sunset, way less crowded than the beachfront at night.

also on Umhlanga, if u go on a weekend parking near the lighthouse fills up by like 9am so rather park at the Pearls mall & walk down, it's only 10 min. the tidal pool gets packed with kids by midday so go early if u actually want to swim.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Solid list, though I'd add one thing about the Golden Mile that visitors tend to get wrong. The stretch between North Beach and Bay of Plenty is fine during the day, but I wouldn't wander the promenade much past 8pm, especially alone. Rather take a short Uber to Florida Road or Umhlanga for evening plans.

On the bunny chow front, Gounden's is the sentimental pick but I'd honestly send people to Sunrise Chip 'n Ranch in Overport for a mutton bunny, the gravy there is something else. Also worth knowing that a "quarter" is plenty for one person, so don't be brave and order a half unless you're sharing.

One small correction on the Botanic Gardens: the craft market moved indoors to the Visitor Centre a while back, so it runs rain or shine now. Still the last Sunday, still 9am to 2pm.
