I'd like easy walks to the main sights but also decent food options nearby. Any locals or frequent visitors have a favorite area to recommend?

honestly the kremlin area is nice but you'll be surrounded by tour groups all day. I'd look at the block between Kirova and Respublikanskaya, kind of behind the drama theater. it's a 5 min walk to everything but you actually get local life, like a decent coffee at "Kofe na Kirova" and the "Skver" bar does good craft beer without the tourist markup. the sovetskaya side is fine but the kirova side has better late night food, prob the "Burger Club" on Respublikanskaya if you want something easy after a long day. one thing nobody mentions, the city is hilly near the Volga, so if you're not used to walking up slopes, pick something on the flat side closer to the river, not up toward Vspolye.

The area around the Volga embankment, closer to the Church of Elijah the Prophet, is another solid bet. You're basically in the middle of the historical center, so the kremlin, the main pedestrian street Kirova, and most museums are within a 15 minute walk, and the riverside promenade is right there for sunset strolls. For food, I'd point you to "Dzhonjoli" on Nekrasova for Georgian, and the small "Pryanost" cafe on Komsomolskaya does a great breakfast spread. Just note that the embankment itself can get windy in the evening, so pack a layer even if the day is warm.

stay around kotoroslnaya embankment, near the arrow (streлка). you can walk to the kremlin in 10 mins, and the whole old town is flat, so no struggle. for food, the side streets off sovetskaya have a few solid spots like bar "bublik" and a good georgian place, but honestly the best move is to grab a table at "vanil" on pervomayskaya, it's a short walk and worth it. avoid the train station area, it's dead at night, and you'll feel stuck there. if you want late night options, stick closer to the main pedestrian street, kirova, but it gets touristy, so pick a hotel a block off it for quiet.
