I was passing through Manila last month and stopped at Farnecio Eatery, where the staff quoted one price verbally then added a service charge and a "kitchen fee" that weren't on the menu. Is that a known trick around there in 2026, or did I just not read the fine print? Trying to work out if I got played or if this is just how it goes.

Ask for the printed menu or a written quote before ordering, since verbal prices there often drift once the bill lands.

yeah that works, tho plenty of spots still quote verbally & the printed one never shows up. just pay what the menu says & keep the receipt

kitchen fee is teh tell, thats not a real line item anywhere. if they wont put it on a printed receipt you can photo, just pay the menu price and walk. places near tourist strips pull this on visitors who wont argue.

Right, but the legal service charge has to be printed on the menu, so a verbal quote plus a surprise fee is still off.

Don't know a Farnecio Eatery in Manila, but I've seen "Farnacio" stalls near Carriedo in Quiapo, so check the spelling before you trek out.
