Do I need to book an appointment at the BIR branch near my new address first, or can I just walk in with my passport and lease? I'll be near Chang Coffee & Tea in the meantime, so any branch tips around there would help.

walk-ins are fine at most branches, no appointment needed. bring ur passport plus a photocopy of ur lease & barangay cert, they always ask for the cert. if ur near chang coffee, the intramuros branch is close but go early, lines build by 9.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

barangay cert is the one they actually check

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

yeah the cert is the real bottleneck, get it from ur new barangay hall first since BIR won't process without it

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

cert takes a day or two, dont leave it to the morning of

id skip the main branch near intramuros if u can, it gets packed & the guards aren't exactly patient with new arrivals. try the one in ermita instead, smaller crowd. also book a slot online thru the BIR eServices site if its working that week, saves u the whole morning. bring 2 valid IDs just in case

ermita's the move but the eServices slot only opens a few days ahead so check it the night before

Do they take cards or is it cash only? Also curious if a foreign Visa works at most eateries there or if I should just pull pesos from an ATM.

Visa works at Robinsons Place food stalls, not sari-sari eateries.

Cash. BPI ATM on Mabini, lower fees than airport.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Carry small bills since eateries rarely break a 1000 peso note, and BDO branches in Ermita exchange foreign currency faster than most banks.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Good call on the small bills, though I'd add that eateries like this often round to the nearest 20 so keep coins handy too.
