u can come in on a standard 9a tourist visa and then get extensions at the main immigration office on magsaysay blvd in intramuros, each one is usually 1 or 2 months and they stack up to around 36 months total. no need to sort it before u fly, just do it once ur here. the thing that trips people up is the ACR I-card, u have to get fingerprinted and photographed once u pass a certain stay length, and if u miss that step the next extension gets held up. bring photocopies of ur passport bio page and entry stamp, they always want extras

Budget for the cash side of it. Extension fees run a few thousand pesos each time once you add the express lane fee, and they're cash only at the window. Also check your visa's validity window before booking, since some nationalities get 30 days on arrival and others 59. Overstaying even a day means a fine and a longer queue.
