i'd add that the hamhung grand theatre shows are worth catching even if you're not usually into traditional stuff. the musicians are seriously talented and the acoustics in there are surprisingly good for a smaller venue. also, if you're heading to the industrial district, ask your guide about the vinalon complex's history, the story behind it is wild and gives you a better sense of why hamhung is such an important city
the grand monument is impressive but honestly the real magic happens if you go at sunset when the light hits the bronze just right. also worth mentioning that the okryu-gwan branch for naengmyeon is a bit hard to spot from the street, it's tucked behind a smaller shop so keep an eye out for the sign. the fortress park is nice but it's tiny, don't expect a long walk
Songdowon Beach is pretty low key but it's a nice break from the city. I'd recommend bringing snacks though, the snack bar runs out of stuff fast in the afternoon.

honestly the guide nailed most of it but they missed a gem in the Songhwa neighborhood. there's this tiny spot called "Ajumma's Kitchen" about two blocks past Grandma's Table, no sign in English, just a red awning. their doenjang jjigae is insane, like 7,000 won and it comes with five banchan. i went there on a rainy afternoon and the ajumma refilled my rice bowl twice without asking, which pretty much sums up why i keep going back to Hamhung.
one thing i'd add about the Central Market stalls the guide mentions - the grilled squid at stall number 7 (not 12) is actually better than the mandu imo. it's 2,000 won a skewer and they brush it with gochujang while it chars. get there around 6pm when the grills are hottest and the line is short. just a heads up they only take cash, no card reader
fwiw the guide's right about the Sky Terrace being good but there's a better view spot if you walk five minutes east from Central Square. there's a rooftop bar called "Moon View" above the old pharmacy building on 2nd Street, no elevator just stairs. they do grilled pork belly for 12,000 won and the view of the city lights at 8pm is unbeatable. owner's this old guy who used to be a fisherman so he always has fresh squid too
one thing nobody's mentioned yet is the morning rice cake scene near the train station. around 6am there's a cart run by an old couple selling injeolmi for 2,000 won a box, still warm from the steam. they set up at the corner of Jongro and 3rd Street, right where the bus stop is. get there before 7am or they sell out, the workers grab them on their way to the factories
The guide's tip about the Hamhung Grand Restaurant is solid, but I'd suggest trying their bibimbap instead of the naengmyeon on a cold day. It comes in a hot stone bowl and the crispy rice at the bottom is worth the extra 1,000 won over the cold noodles. I've been there maybe a dozen times and the staff always remember my order, which says a lot about the place.
For the East Sea Fish Restaurant, make sure to ask for the grilled eel off the menu board in Korean, not the English one. The Korean board has a daily special that's often 2,000 won cheaper and comes with extra ssam vegetables. I learned that after a few visits and now I never order from the English menu.
