honestly i'd skip the shopping center area and look closer to the trevo do km 7. there's a cluster of food stalls near the roundabout that do killer chamussas and prego rolls for like 50 meticais each. the 100 bus from there goes straight to maputo's baixa every 10 minutes, way faster than dealing with n4 traffic. plus you get that real matola vibe, not the border town rush
Another option is to look near the junction of Avenida das FPLM and the road to Boane. It's a bit quieter than the main drags but there's a mercado municipal there with excellent fresh produce and a few women selling xima and caril de amendoim from their homes. The chapas heading into Maputo's downtown stop right at that junction, and you skip most of the N4 mess by taking the back roads through the bairros. Just be ready for the dust if it hasn't rained.
If you want easy access to Maputo and solid local food, look around the area near the Matola Shopping Center or along Avenida 25 de Setembro. The minibuses to Maputo run constantly from the main stops there and it's only about 20 minutes to the city center. For food, the little pastelarias and barracas along that stretch do good matapa and frango grelhado with piri-piri, much better than the pricier spots closer to the border. Just keep in mind that traffic on the N4 can get brutal during rush hour, so plan your crossing accordingly.
