Secundaria Memories?

They've told me stories about the crazy school dances and the legendary rivalry with the school across town. My question is: what's the real story behind the school's mascot? My friend just said it's "a legend" but wouldn't elaborate... Hoping to find some old yearbooks or something while I'm there, to unlock this mystery!

If you're going to the reunion itself, that's where the story actually lives. The bat nickname traces back to the old gym, sure, but the version I always heard growing up here is that it started with the porra at the inter secundarias games in the late 70s, before the building even had the bat problem. The chant got shortened to "murciélagos" and it stuck harder than any official mascot ever could. Your friend's family will probably tell you three different versions at the same table, and honestly none of them will fully agree. That's kind of the point.

Worth knowing that Juan de la Barrera is actually a national name, not just a Cancun thing. The school is named after one of the six Niños Héroes from the 1847 Battle of Chapultepec, so a lot of secundarias across Mexico carry the same name and the same bat lore gets recycled. What makes the Cancun one specific is the Av. Chichén Itzá campus and the rivalry with the school over in Region 91, which locals still argue about at reunions. If you want the real paper trail, skip the yearbooks and ask at the dirección for old periódico mural photos, those usually survived better than the anuarios.

the mascot thing is real but its less a mascot and more a nickname the other schools stuck on them. juan de la barrera kids got called "los murciélagos" back in the 80s because the old building on av. chichen itza had bats in the rafters of the gym, and the rival school over in region 91 turned it into a taunt during the big futbol games. the school eventually just owned it. yearbooks from the 90s actually show a bat drawn on the cover, so check the biblioteca or ask the conserje, he's been there like 30 years and remembers everything.

Secundaria Juan de la Barrera

Forget about it. He keeps mentioning this one teacher, Señora Rodriguez, who's legendary for her pop quizzes. Seriously, he's convinced she can predict the future. So my question is: what's the craziest rumour you've heard about Señora Rodriguez and her pop quizzes at Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera? Is she actually psychic...?

my tia subbed there for a semester & said the notebook thing is real but its not about predicting anything. she just recycles the same 5 questions every cycle so by week 3 everyone whos been paying attention already knows whats coming. the actual chaos is the morning shift, kids hopping the fence by the cancha to grab tortas before the 7am bell.

honestly the psychic thing is mostly just kids being dramatic. my neighbor's kid went there and swore she keeps a little notebook with every class's weak spots, like she knows exactly who didnt read the chapter. tbh thats less ESP and more her just paying attention for 20 years. also the lunch chaos is real, that whole stretch near Av. Chac Mool gets nuts around 2pm when everyone spills out.

I don't know about psychic but a friend swears she once gave a quiz on a chapter nobody had been assigned yet.
