I've heard horror stories about the… So, I'm planning a trip to this gorgeous-looking chalet, Arsgan House, near Cancun. The pictures online are stunning, but I'm a little worried about the mosquitos. I've heard horror stories about the Yucatan peninsula... Anyone been there recently? What kind of mosquito repellent actually WORKS? I'm packing the industrial-strength stuff, but I'm still nervous. I really want to enjoy the hammock on the patio without feeling like I'm in a horror movie.

the key is timing more than anything. the mosquitos really come out right at sunset and for about an hour after, so plan your hammock time around that if u can. i'd also grab a bottle of the local repellent called repelente familiar from the farmacia near Mercado 28, it's like 60 pesos and works better than anything i've brought from home. the breeze at Arsgan House usually helps keep them away too if you're on the patio

honestly the mosquitos are bad but not like, apocalypse bad. if you're staying at Arsgan House, it's prob a bit inland so they might be worse than right on the beach. the trick is to get a repellent with picaridin, not just deet. the stuff with picaridin doesn't smell as nasty and it lasts longer. also, the locals here swear by those citronella coils you can get at the Oxxo on Tulum Avenue for like 30 pesos. just light one under the hammock and you're golden.

my tia subbed there for a semester & said the notebook thing is real but its not about predicting anything. she just recycles the same 5 questions every cycle so by week 3 everyone whos been paying attention already knows whats coming. the actual chaos is the morning shift, kids hopping the fence by the cancha to grab tortas before the 7am bell.

honestly the psychic thing is mostly just kids being dramatic. my neighbor's kid went there and swore she keeps a little notebook with every class's weak spots, like she knows exactly who didnt read the chapter. tbh thats less ESP and more her just paying attention for 20 years. also the lunch chaos is real, that whole stretch near Av. Chac Mool gets nuts around 2pm when everyone spills out.
