The pictures online are stunning, but they don't show much about the surrounding area. I'm curious, is there a good local spot nearby for authentic Yucatecan food? I'm really hoping to avoid the tourist traps and get a feel for the real Mexico. I've heard some amazing things about the local cuisine, but I'm unsure how to navigate away from the resorts without ending up in some dodgy place... Any tips would be amazing!

honestly just drive down the 307 toward puerto morelos, there's a bunch of roadside places that look like someone's house with a grill out front. pull over where you see a bunch of trucks parked, that's your sign. the one with a hand-painted sign that just says "loncheria" and has a grandma in the back has the best sopa de lima i've ever had

fwiw the best cochinita pibil i've found is actually at a gas station off the 307 near the airport exit. sounds weird but there's a pemex with a loncheria built into the side, no name just a red awning and a guy named juan who starts smoking the pork at 5am. it's like 60 pesos for a torta with habanero salsa that'll clear your sinuses for a week. bring cash and don't expect a menu, he'll just ask if you want it on a torta or in tacos and that's the whole transaction

Mercado 28 is solid, but if you want something even more low-key, drive 15 minutes north to the small town of Puerto Juarez. There's a cluster of palapa-roofed spots on the water near the ferry dock where fishermen eat after their morning trips. Grab a table at one called El Pescador, they do a version of tikin xic with fresh catch that's way better than anything in the hotel zone. It's not fancy at all, just plastic chairs and paper plates, but that's exactly what you're looking for.

Forget about it. He keeps mentioning this one teacher, Señora Rodriguez, who's legendary for her pop quizzes. Seriously, he's convinced she can predict the future. So my question is: what's the craziest rumour you've heard about Señora Rodriguez and her pop quizzes at Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera? Is she actually psychic...?

my tia subbed there for a semester & said the notebook thing is real but its not about predicting anything. she just recycles the same 5 questions every cycle so by week 3 everyone whos been paying attention already knows whats coming. the actual chaos is the morning shift, kids hopping the fence by the cancha to grab tortas before the 7am bell.

honestly the psychic thing is mostly just kids being dramatic. my neighbor's kid went there and swore she keeps a little notebook with every class's weak spots, like she knows exactly who didnt read the chapter. tbh thats less ESP and more her just paying attention for 20 years. also the lunch chaos is real, that whole stretch near Av. Chac Mool gets nuts around 2pm when everyone spills out.

I don't know about psychic but a friend swears she once gave a quiz on a chapter nobody had been assigned yet.
