🍜 Must-Try Street Food
Start your food journey at SS2's hawker center for Penang-style asam laksa and char koay teow. The famous Ah Lai White Curry Mee at 22, Jalan 21/11B serves a rich, coconut-based broth with prawns and chicken for around RM 8. Open from 7 AM to 2 PM, it's a breakfast staple.

πŸ₯Ÿ Iconic Chinese Eateries
Restoran Oversea at 1, Jalan 223 offers excellent dim sum and Cantonese dishes, with prices averaging RM 15-30 per person. For wantan mee, head to Kedai Kopi Sin Yew Kee at 15, Jalan 20/13, where the springy noodles and char siu cost just RM 6.50.

πŸ› Best Indian Cuisine
Sri Paandi Restaurant at 42, Jalan SS 2/72 serves authentic banana leaf rice with a variety of curries and fried chicken for RM 10-15. Their masala thosai and vadai are also excellent. Open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM.

🍒 Night Market Feasts
The SS2 night market (pasar malam) every Monday from 5 PM to 9 PM offers endless street food like grilled satay, apam balik, and fried popiah. Try the famous SS2 Hokkien Mee stall for thick noodles in dark soy sauce, priced at RM 7.

β˜• Coffee and Desserts
For a caffeine fix, visit Artisan Roast Coffee at 17, Jalan 17/45, where single-origin brews start at RM 12. For dessert, the cendol at Restoran SS2 Cendol & Laksa at 10, Jalan SS 2/10 is a must, with creamy coconut milk and green jelly for RM 4.

🍽️ Hidden Gems in PJ
Explore the backstreets of Section 17 for Yong Tau Foo at Restoran Yulek, where you pick your own stuffed vegetables and tofu, served in a clear broth for RM 8. Another gem is the claypot chicken rice at Restoran Kim Lian Kee in SS2, cooked over charcoal and priced at RM 10.

πŸš— Getting Around for Food
PJ is best explored by car or ride-hailing apps like Grab, as many food spots are spread out. Parking can be tight at popular hawker centers, so consider going early or using the MRT to stations like SS2 or Taman Jaya, then walking or taking a short Grab ride.

πŸ’° Budget Tips
Most street food meals cost between RM 5 and RM 15, making PJ a budget-friendly destination. Cash is still king at hawker stalls, so carry small bills. For a splurge, a full meal at a mid-range restaurant like Oversea will run RM 30-50 per person.

the guide's got the big names right but misses some of the late night spots. if you're out after midnight, head to the tomyam stall behind the shell station on jalan ss2/55, they do a killer tom yum seafood noodle soup for rm 8 that's way better than the touristy versions. also the cendol at ss2 cendol & laksa is good but i prefer the one at the old town kopitiam near the mrt station, it's less sweet and the gula melaka is more pronounced. the guide does a great job covering the daytime staples though

solid list, covers the main spots well. one thing i'd add is the nasi kandar at restoran nasi kandar pelita in ss2, it's open 24 hours and their fried chicken with the curry mix is solid, around rm 12 for a full plate. the ah lai white curry mee is a must but be warned, the queue on weekends can hit 30 mins easy, go on a weekday morning instead. for a quick bite that's not on here, the popiah basah at the ss2 pasar malam is underrated, it's wetter and sweeter than the fried version, rm 3 a roll and they make it fresh in front of you

Good breakdown of PJ's food scene. One thing worth noting is that the char koay teow at the SS2 hawker centre has two stalls doing it and the one directly facing the main walkway is noticeably better. Also, if you are around Section 17 late at night, the Wan Tan Mee at Restoran Ah Niu on Jalan 17/13 runs from 10 PM until 3 AM and their char siu is caramelized on the edges, a different style from the Sin Yew Kee version. The guide's budget advice about cash is key, a lot of those late night stalls still do not take any digital payment.

Petaling Jaya food recs for a 5 month stay

Moving to PJ in about 5 months for work and need to know where to eat. I'm into local street food but also open to hidden gems. Any must-try spots around SS2 or Damansara? honestly ss2 is a goldmine for street food. the morning pasar there has some killer apam balik with the crispy edges, about rm2 a piece. for dinner, the ss2 murni is overrated imo, skip it and hit the teluk ketapang stall behind the main row for their char kuay teow instead.

damansara utama is where i'd go for hidden gems, specifically the new commercial area near the mrt. there's a small kedai kopi called kopi & banjir that does nasi lemak with sambal that actually has depth, not just sweet. they open for breakfast only till like 11am, so get there early. for a quick lunch, the burger stall at the shell station on jalan ss21/37 is legit, they do a mean ramly burger with extra cheese and telur, around rm6.50.

fwiw, if you're in damansara, check out the wet market area in ss2 early morning. there's this indian stall that does roti canai sambal with teh tarik that's way better than any mamak i've been to. also, for hidden gem, try the claypot chicken rice at the corner of jalan ss21/1a, it's under a tree and they only do dinner but the rice is smoky and the chicken falls off the bone.

The food court at Atria Shopping Gallery in Damansara Jaya is worth a visit for its variety. The satay stall there has been around for years, the meat is well-marinated and they serve it with a thick peanut sauce that has a bit of pineapple in it. For a late night option, the roadside popiah stall near the SS2 police station opens around 9pm and the popiah basah with extra chili is a solid choice, about RM3.50 each.
