My grandma always talked about it, said it was more than just a hospital, had a real history. Apparently, it's been around since like, forever. Anyone know any good, maybe slightly spooky, stories about the old place? Heard whispers of hidden passages or something... hoping to find a cool local legend or two before I go. Seriously hoping it's not just another building.

Tung Shin's been there since 1881, started by a Chinese philanthropist named Loke Yew, so the "forever" part checks out. The original building on Pudu Road is long gone but the site's had a few rebuilds, and yeah there are old service tunnels underneath connecting some of the wards. Staff don't really talk about them much. If you want the actual spooky stuff, the older folks around Jalan Sultan and Petaling Street tell stories about the pre-war shophouses nearby, not so much the hospital itself. Walk down to the area around Kwong Tong cemetery if you want real local ghost lore, that place has way more legends than Tung Shin.

my auntie used to work nights there back in the 90s & she swears the old lift would stop on a floor that wasnt on the panel, doors open to nothing but dark. she never rode it alone after that. if u want the real creepy vibe tho, skip the hospital & go see the old coffinshop row near Jalan Sultan, those uncles have stories for days

The hospital sits right on Jalan Pudu, and the block behind it toward Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah is where you'll feel the older Kuala Lumpur. That area was a burial ground before it got developed, which is partly why the Chinese community built the hospital there in the first place, they wanted to care for the living near where the dead had been laid. I don't know about hidden passages exactly, but the basement levels and the older wings have that low-ceiling, cold-air feel that gets people talking. If you're wandering, poke around the shophouses on Jalan Pudu between the hospital and Puduraya, some of those pre-war units have back lanes that connect in ways that surprise you.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
