UM's Hidden History?

I'm heading to the University of Malaya next week for a conference. Heard whispers about some seriously old, maybe even haunted, buildings on campus, the ones tucked away, not the shiny new ones. Anyo… I'm heading to the University of Malaya next week for a conference. Heard whispers about some seriously old, maybe even haunted, buildings on campus, the ones tucked away, not the shiny new ones. Anyone know any good (or spooky!) stories about the older parts of the university? I'm especially curious about the original admin building

theres a block near the law faculty everyone forgets, the old asrama tunku kurshiah area... those colonial bungalows along jalan pantai dalam there were staff quarters in the 50s, some still standing. if ur conference is at the main campus just walk the road behind the dewan tunku canselor, quieter than the muzium side & u can still see the original louvered windows & blackwood staircases. ask the jaga at the surau there, uncle has been on campus since the 70s & will tell u which rooms teachers refused to use after dark... mostly rat stories tho not hantu lol

the old admin building is the one near the museum, right? the campus calls it the muzium building now. it was built in the 1900s when this whole area was still rubber estate, so some of those corridors are older than the university itself. security wont let u in past 6pm and tbh the guard stories are mostly about stray dogs not ghosts lol. if u want actual history walk to the rimba ilmu gallery nearby, theyve got old photos of the original campus

original admin building is the muzium building, but most ppl dont know the real old stuff is up the hill at bangsar gate side. the dewan tunku canselor was built around 1966 & the concrete still has the original brunei marble, looks nothing from outside. if u can talk ur way into the senate room theres a portrait of the first chancellor that staff swear the eyes follow u, classic lah but fun. for actual hauntings most of the stories sit with the old science block near the railway line, guards wont do night rounds there alone

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
