Jalan Limau Purut Mysteries
Jalan Limau Purut is in the Bukit Bintang area, near Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Imbi, so it's not actually that quiet once you get past the residential stretch. The name comes from limau purut, which is kaffir lime, and the story I've always heard is that the road used to be lined with those trees before development took over. The "cursed" angle is mostly embellishment, though there are older folks who'll tell you about a particular tree near the end of the road that people avoided after dark. It's a fun story to repeat at weddings, nothing more sinister than that.
I've got relatives who've lived off Limau Purut for decades and the version they tell is less about curses and more about a datuk kong shrine that used to sit near one of the old lime trees. People would leave offerings there before travelling, and when the trees got cleared for development the shrine got moved, which is probably where the "spirits got angry" bit crept in. Honestly the spookiest thing there now is the traffic on the main road during rush hour. Enjoy the wedding, it's a nice enough area once you're off the main drag.
The limau purut angle gets all the attention but the real oddity on that street is the numbering. Houses there skip from 12 to 14A to 16 with no 14, and there's a plot of land between two bungalows that nobody's ever built on. Old-timers say it was reserved for a shrine or a well that got filled in during the 70s. If you're at the wedding and someone points out the gap in the row, that's the bit worth asking about, not the lime trees.

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely
tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.
oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
