KL Bird Park's Secret?

But I noticed something weird. Lots of the smaller birds seemed really skittish, hiding in the bushes. Was there something scaring them? Maybe a predator I didn't see, or is it something else entirely? I'd love to know more about what the park does to protect the smaller species from natural predators or other dangers. Any local bird enthusiasts know?

tbh the skittish thing is also just normal bird behavior in an open aviary. smaller species like munias and white-eyes are prey animals everywhere, not just here, so they hug cover by instinct. the park actually does have a few things going on for protection, like the hornbill and eagle enclosures are fully netted off so theyre not loose with the small stuff, and staff do nest checks around the perimeter to keep monitor lizards and civets out. if u want to see the little ones relaxed, head to the walk-in aviary near the waterfall section, its denser planting so they feel safer there.

honestly the skittish thing might partly be the Brahminy kites and sea eagles circling overhead. the park sits right next to the Lake Gardens so wild raptors drift over constantly, and small birds react to shadows above them even when nothing's actually diving. staff can't really stop that since the kites aren't park birds.

if you go again try the free flight area around 10am after the eagle feeding demo, the small species settle down once the big raptors move off. also the misting system near the lorikeet section kicks on around noon and the finches love it, they come right out.

the skittishness is mostly the hornbills & the free roaming peacocks tbh. theyre way bigger & will absolutely bully smaller birds off the feeders, so the little guys learn to stay low in the shrubs. its not a predator thing, just pecking order lol. go early like 8am when its feeding time, way more action & the small birds come out more

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
