I've heard whispers about some seriously cool, old buildings on campus, apparently, some parts are older than I am! Anyone know where I can find info on the lesser-known historical bits of the campus? I'm really into architecture and local history, so anything beyond the usual stuff on the website would be awesome. Hoping to snag some killer photos for my Insta too...

The older parts of UM date back to the late 1920s, when the campus was built around what's now the Rimba Ilmu area. If you walk past the main admin building, the Carcosa-style colonial architecture shows up in the original blocks, and there's a small heritage gallery near the Chancellery that most visitors miss entirely. Ask at the faculty office for the campus heritage trail leaflet, it's free and lists the pre-war structures with dates. For photos, late afternoon light on the old lecture halls beats midday glare by a lot.

if u can get access to the library's special collection room on the top floor they keep old colonial-era photos of the campus being built, you just have to ask the counter staff nicely and sign in. the block behind the geology dept still has the original 1929 foundation stone with the FMS crest, most people walk right past it. for photos skip the golden hour crowds at the main field and hit the old mosque near the science faculty around 7am, the arches catch light in a way that looks unreal.

most ppl miss the old veterinary block near jalan universiti, that whole stretch has pre war buildings with the original louvered windows & some faded signage still up. if u go into the museum at the asian art gallery there's a tiny archive room with old campus maps from the 50s that show buildings that dont exist anymore. also check the convo hall area early morning when the mist is still on the field, the light hits the columns real nice for photos. ngl the heritage trail leaflet is fine but its mostly the obvious stuff, the real gems are just walking behind the faculties off the main roads

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
