I was expecting, I dunno, some crazy hidden market or something, but it's just... residential. Kinda quiet, actually. Saw a few friendly faces, though. One old lady even offered me a piece of kuih, which was delicious. My question is: what's the story behind this street? Why does everyone talk about it like it's some legendary spot? It's charming, don't get me wrong, but not exactly "legendary." Is there some hidden history I'm missing? Maybe some old folklore? Someone spill the tea!

the real story is less folklore and more that jalan tengah was one of the few streets that didn't get demolished during the big urban renewal push in the 90s. the whole area around it was supposed to become a shopping complex but the land dispute dragged on for years so it just stayed quiet. that old lady with the kuih probably remembers when the street had a proper pasar malam every friday night, her family used to sell pulut inti from their front porch. if you want the real hidden gem, walk to the end and look for the faded sign for "tai thong" bakery, it closed in 2015 but they made the best kaya puff in the klang valley

oh you're right, it's not some big secret market or anything dramatic. but jalan tengah is legendary because it's one of the last surviving pockets of old kl that didn't get swallowed by condos and malls. that stretch used to be part of a bigger network of back lanes where the chinese and indian communities in brickfields would walk to the temple and the old batu road train station. the real draw for locals is the roti john stall that sets up around 7pm near the mosque, been there for 40 years, best one in town. if you go back on a weekday evening you'll see why people talk about it, it's not the street itself but the way it still feels like kl from the 60s

Probably just word-of-mouth hype that got out of hand. Jalan Tengah's probably been around for ages, so a few interesting stories might've built up over time, maybe some old family lived there for generations, or there was a small shop that was really popular back in the day. People remember those things, embellish them a bit over the years, and boom, legendary street. It's like that with tons of places. Don't sweat it, enjoy the kuih and the quiet. You got a good story out of it anyway!

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?
arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
