Anyone know the best spots for cheap, authentic Malaysian food near the faculty of medicine? I'm trying to avoid the tourist traps. Seriously considering bringing my own Tupperware to avoid overpriced cafeteria food...

You don't need to bring Tupperware, but I get the instinct. The best bet is the row of stalls just outside the faculty on Jalan Pantai Baharu, right where the old bus stop is. There's a nasi lemak seller there around 9am who does a killer sambal with fried chicken for like RM6, way better than anything inside the campus canteen. If you're around for lunch, head to the Restoran Mohd Noor in the same area, the roti canai is cheap and it's where the local staff actually eat.

honestly the food court in the UM mosque area is slept on. it's a bit of a walk from the faculty of medicine but the nasi kandar there is legit and usually under RM5. the stalls rotate so lunch crowd gets fresh stuff around 12:30. fwiw the canteen at the faculty itself is overpriced but the teh tarik guy near the old library is worth a detour.

The food trucks that park along Jalan Universiti near the faculty gates around lunchtime are a solid option. There's a guy who does claypot chicken rice with salted fish for about RM7, and he's usually there by 11:30 before the rush. It's not fancy, but the portion is generous and you can eat while watching the monkeys on the grass. If you're feeling adventurous, walk five minutes to the hawker center at Seksyen 17, the curry laksa from the auntie at stall 8 is better than most shops in the city center.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
