Seriously impressive stuff, the history exhibits were amazing. But I noticed a small, almost hidden door on the third floor, it looked like it led to a storage room or something. Nobody seemed to know anything about it. My question is: what's behind that mysterious door? Anyone know the story or have a pic?

ngl i've been wondering about that door too. a friend who used to volunteer there said it leads to an old curator's office that's been locked since the 90s. apparently there's still a bunch of paperwork and photos from the original exhibitions tucked away in there. no treasure or curse, just relics of bureaucratic history lol.

I asked one of the older guides near the entrance about it once. He said that door used to lead to a small conservation lab back in the 80s, before they moved that work to the new facility in Bangi. Apparently they'd do minor repairs on artifacts right there, so behind it is just empty benches and old chemical cabinets. The door's been locked since the lab relocated, but he mentioned you can sometimes see a faint light through the crack at night when the cleaners go in to check on it.

Honestly, the most interesting thing I've heard about that door is from a friend who used to work at Muzium Negara. It's not storage or a roof, but apparently it leads to a small archive room with old exhibition blueprints and letters from the 1960s when the museum first opened. She said they used to store stuff like diorama sketches and old taxidermy records in there. No photos though, they're pretty strict about letting anyone in.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
