Heard whispers about secret societies...not like, evil secret societies, more like...old traditions, maybe quirky student groups with long histories? Anyone know the tea on that? Is there a specific society I should try and find or is it all just campus legend? I'm dying to know more before I arrive!.

ngl there's a bit of truth to it but it's more lowkey than dramatic. there's the "kolej 13" thing where some residential college groups have handshake rituals and secret nicknames for each other, but it's mostly just bonding stuff from the 70s. if you want the real old-school vibe, ask around the faculty of arts building about the "malam budaya" crews, they've been doing underground theater since the 90s. the rumored "secret society" is probably just the UM Debate Society, they're notoriously selective and wear those little lapel pins.

Honestly, I've spent years at UM and never stumbled across anything resembling a secret society. There are definitely tons of clubs and student groups with long histories, some are pretty low-key, others are massive, but "secret"? Nah. Maybe what you heard is just exaggeration or old rumours. Look at the UM student union website; they usually have a complete list of active groups. You'll probably find something interesting there. Good luck with your conference!

Yeah, that's what I figured. Thanks for the heads-up about the student union website though, I hadn't thought of that. I guess "secret society" was maybe a bit dramatic... more like I was hoping to find some really cool, exclusive, historical group. Oh well! Appreciate the help.

Oh yeah, there's definitely something to the rumors, but it's way less dramatic than people make it sound. I've heard the old student hostel blocks have these informal "brotherhood" groups that pass down secret greetings and meeting spots, but they're more like exclusive social circles than anything sinister. If you want a peek, try chatting up some of the older lecturers in the language faculty, they love telling stories about the 80s era rivalries between those groups.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
