National Museum's Secret?

It was amazing, but I couldn't find anything about the supposed secret tunnels supposedly running underneath the building. My grandpa, who grew up near there, always told wild stories about them, said there were hidden chambers full of old artifacts and maybe even some treasure... Anybody ever heard anything about these tunnels? I'm dying to know!!

my late aunt did conservation work at Muzium Negara in the 80s and she always said the "tunnels" people talk about were actually old drainage and utility conduits, the kind colonial buildings had for moving water and cables. she went down one once near the annex, said it was barely wide enough for a person to crouch and smelled like a wet cellar. the treasure bit is pure kampung storytelling imo, but if u wanna see the real thing ask about the site's pre-1959 foundations, thats where the interesting structural stuff is.

tbh the tunnel stories are prob exaggerated but not totally made up. the museum building used to be part of the old Selangor Museum which got bombed in WWII, and there were basement storage areas that people confused with tunnels. my uncle worked security there in the 90s and said there's a sealed lower level near the north wing, closed off for decades. nothing about treasure tho, mostly just old crates and damp walls from what he heard.

if u ever get a chance to talk to the old guards who do the night shift there, ask them instead of the front desk. one of them told me the sealed section under the north wing connects toward the old railway land, and during the 70s they used it to store leftover exhibit pieces when the museum was renovating. no gold, just dusty kerosene lamps & some colonial-era ledgers that got eaten by damp. easiest way to scratch the itch is the muzium negara archive request form, u can email them & they actually reply

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
