KL Bird Park's Mystery

I spent hours just watching them. But there was this one section, kinda hidden behind a really overgrown bush... I swear I saw a HUGE bird, unlike anything else in the park. It was mostly hidden, just a glimpse of iridescent feathers. Anyone else see anything unusual there? Or is my imagination running wild?

If it was near the bamboo clump past the second pond, could also be a male great argus. Theyre in the pheasant zone but sometimes wander into the scrubby bits. Iridescent blue-brown feathers, big tail, super shy. Keepers told me they free range a bit so you're not imagining things.

the overgrown section behind the hornbill aviary? thats where the peafowl like to hide out. they roost in teh bamboo there and the iridescent feathers are usually the males. nothing mysterious, just a peacock being a peacock. go around 9am when the keepers do feeding, you'll see them out in the open.

that bush area near the back lake is actually where the free-roaming water monitors hang out too, so if u saw something big moving low it might not have been a bird at all. those buggers get to like 2m & love hiding in the overgrowth. next time snap a pic from the walkway, hard to tell iridescent feathers from wet monitor scales at a glance

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
