Anyone know the best-kept secret food stalls or canteens? I'm trying to avoid the overpriced cafes and want something authentically Malaysian and delicious. Bonus points if it's not packed with students!

The food court at the International House is your best bet if you want variety without the student swarm. They have a mixed rice stall that does a killer ayam masak merah and the lady running it remembers regulars' orders from years ago. It's tucked behind the main building so most people walking past miss it entirely. Also worth noting the teh tarik there is made with evaporated milk, not the sweetened condensed stuff, so it's less cloying if you're not used to Malaysian roadside sweetness.

ngl the best food on campus is actually outside the formal canteens. there's a pakcik who parks his motorcycle burger stall near the varsity lake around 5pm, makes a mean ramly burger with the egg folded into the patty, only rm4.50. also the kafe fakulti sastera is slept on, they do a proper nasi lemak with sambal that actually has wok hei, costs like rm3 and you can sit outside under the trees. just bring cash, the older aunties running it don't do touch n go

honestly just skip the main canteens and head to the old law faculty area, there's a hidden nasi kandar stall behind the block that's been there since the 90s. the curry is thick and they give you a whole fried fish for like rm8, students usually don't bother walking that far. if you want something sweet after, the apam balik cart near the engineering faculty gate is better than any cafe on campus, the uncle makes teh tarik with real condensed milk not that powder stuff. just go before 12pm or after 2pm to avoid the lunch rush

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
