The air hung thick with the smell of durian and frying onions, a truly intoxicating mix. I found myself captivated by the intricate details of the shophouses, each one a unique story etched in weathered wood and vibrant paint. But I couldn't find a single decent kopi shop that served a proper teh tarik. Seriously, where are all the good teh tarik places? Is it a secret society or something?

ngl you were walking right past them. Jalan Tengah itself is mostly old school Hainanese joints where the coffee rules. but if you cut through the alley behind the Guan Di Temple, there's a little mamak stall tucked between two hardware shops. they do teh tarik from about 7pm till midnight and it's legit, pulled six feet high and everything. also, try the corner of Jalan Hang Lekiu, that place with the blue sign has been around since the 80s and they don't bother advertising.

Yeah, Jalan Tengah's more about the Hainanese coffee scene, not the pulled tea. If you're dead set on teh tarik, take a quick Grab over to Kampung Baru, there's a mamak near the market that does it with just the right amount of condensed milk. It's not a secret, just a different part of town.

Honestly, you're not wrong. Jalan Tengah is more about the old-school Chinese kopitiams where the coffee is thick and black, not the pulled milk tea you're after. Head over to the SS2 area in Petaling Jaya if you want the real deal. There's a row of mamak stalls near the pasar malam that pull teh tarik with enough froth to make a barista jealous. Also, try the corner shop at Jalan SS2/72, they've been doing it for decades and it's about RM2.50 a glass.

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
