It was incredible. But I couldn't find any information about the specific species of the really large, almost iridescent blue bird I saw near the waterfall. It was breathtaking, huge...almost like a giant blue jay, but way more vibrant. Anyone know what kind of bird that was? I tried looking it up online after, but no luck.

The size you're describing sounds more like a Great Argus pheasant, not a parrot. They have that iridescent blue sheen on their necks and chests, and they're massive birds. You'll usually find them near the waterfall area because they like the humidity. The males fan out their feathers in a huge display during mating season, which is something to see if you ever go back.

That sounds amazing! Three hours in the aviaries... wow. I'm guessing, based on your description of size and iridescent blue, it might have been a Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. They're pretty big and their plumage can look intensely blue depending on the light. Worth checking pictures of that species to see if it matches your memory. Good luck!

That's a great suggestion! I hadn't thought of the Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. I'll definitely look up some pictures, the blue was so vibrant, it's stuck in my head. Thanks for the help!

could be a great argus pheasant like someone mentioned, but also maybe a victoria crowned pigeon? they're huge, blue-ish, and super chill around water. i've seen them near the aviary's little streams before

Hundreds of birds, all sorts of colours. But I noticed something weird, there was this one section, almost hidden, with just a few really unusual birds, no signs, nothing. They looked...sad? I couldn't figure out what was going on with them. Anyone know the story behind that secluded area? Is it like a bird retirement home or something?

the back area past the hornbill enclosure? i've heard keepers call it the quarantine row. new arrivals & sick birds go there first before they get moved into the main aviaries, so the "sad" look is often just stress from transport or treatment. some of those rare ones are on loan from perhilitan for rehab, they rotate out once they're healthy. if u go on a weekday morning you can sometimes catch a keeper near the gate, they'll usually tell u what's in there if u ask nicely

tbh that hidden section is prob the old breeding block, not quarantine. they used to run captive breeding programs there for hornbills and some pheasant species back in the 2000s, and when funding dried up they just kind of left the structure standing. the birds u saw are likely the last few residents of that program, too imprinted to release so they stay put. if u want the real story ask for the head keeper at the main office, the front desk staff usually don't know much about it.

oh that area near the back ponds right? i think those are confiscated birds from the wildlife dept, smuggled ones that got seized at klia. they keep em there quietly cos some are protected species and they dont wanna draw attention. not a retirement home, more like a holding spot.
