Hi Guys,

I am looking to purchase some jewelry and went to Okachimachi where I saw a few shops that seemed reasonable.

I noticed I was only able to find 18k gold which I find too yellow for my liking. I think 14k will be less yellow and also stronger as there are more other metals in it.

One woman mentioned "Japan only has 18k gold". Is that really true?

she's not entirely wrong about the mainstream but 14k is out there if u know where to look. try the jewelry floors at takashimaya or isetan department stores, they sometimes have a small 14k section tucked away near the watch counters. also check out the small shops in ginza's backstreets near wako building, there's a few family-run places that carry both and will custom order 14k for u if they don't have it in stock. just be prepared to pay a bit more than okachimachi prices

nah that woman was wrong, you can def find 14k here just gotta look in the right spots. try Nakano Broadway or the secondhand shops in Shimokitazawa, they often have imported pieces or estate jewelry that's 14k. Okachimachi is mostly wholesale so they stock what sells best locally which is 18k

also check out the vintage stores in Koenji, I found a nice 14k chain at Chicago for like 8000 yen once. just ask for 14金 or K14 and they'll know what you mean even if they don't usually carry it

nah she's wrong, 14k exists here just less common. most japanese jewelers default to 18k because that's the cultural preference for purity but you'll find 14k at places like antique stores or secondhand shops like brand off or daikokuya. also try nakano broadway, there's a few stalls with mixed karat stuff and they're more flexible on pricing than okachimachi

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
