should I be worried about my apartment with the quake?

Hi guys, I live in Meguro on the 8th floor but am on holiday until tomorrow, should I be worried about my place being trashed when I come back? Thanks Hi guys, I live in Meguro on the 8th floor but am on holiday until tomorrow, should I be worried about my place being trashed when I come back? Thanks

Most of the newer towers in Meguro have base isolation systems so the building itself just glides on bearings during a quake. Your actual unit is probably fine, those are built to shift with the ground rather than fight it. I'd be more worried about the fridge door popping open and your milk going bad by tomorrow than any actual damage. The worst I've seen in that area after a moderate quake is a few cabinet latches that didn't hold and some spices scattered across the kitchen floor.

You are on holiday, so don't let it stress you out. Meguro's buildings are held to a higher standard because of the soft ground near the river, and most towers there have dampers that handle the sway. I'd bet you come back to maybe a leaning stack of books or a cabinet door that popped open. Check your water heater's pilot light when you get in, those sometimes flicker out in bigger shakes and you'll just need to relight it.

honestly you're probably fine, Meguro's got some of the stricter building codes in Tokyo since a lot of it's on soft ground near the river. 8th floor means you're above the typical sway zone anyway. if anything fell over it'd be like a picture frame or a mug on your counter, nothing that'd ruin your trip. just brace for a few things scattered when you unlock the door but nothing dramatic

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
