If you're near Asakusa, the Hie Shrine branch at Torigoe does a dondoyaki on the 14th that flies under the radar. It's smaller than Meiji Jingu but the bonfire setup is right in the main courtyard and you can actually feel the heat. No reservations, and they'll take most natural shimekazari but they're strict about no plastic or synthetic materials, they check each one before adding it to the pile.

For something completely different, check out the one at Atago Shrine near Shimbashi. It's on the 15th and they do a small ceremony with a Shinto priest before the burning, which is nice if you want a bit more tradition. No reservation needed but they start at 11am sharp and they burn everything together, so if you're late you're out of luck. They're also fine with most materials as long as you remove any metal wire or plastic clips first.

tomioka hachimangu in fukagawa is another good option, they do theirs on the 15th and it's pretty traditional. they'll take most natural materials but I've seen them turn away stuff with a lot of plastic or those cheap fake pine branches. no reservation needed but they usually start around 10am and it gets crowded fast.

if you're near setagaya, kitazawa hachiman has a smaller one on the 14th that's way more chill than meiji jingu. they're strict about no metal but otherwise fine. I'd bring your stuff before 11am just to be safe since they burn it all in one go around noon

Meiji Jingu usually does a big one on the 14th or 15th I think, no reservation needed. They take pretty much any shimekazari, just no big metal or glass stuff. Gets crowded tho so go early if u can

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
