Where's the best place in Tokyo to experience the countdown and fireworks for the new year?

tbh the best kept secret is going to tokyo tower at like 11:30pm but not the observation deck, just hang around the base near the zojoji temple. you get the tower lit up behind u and the temple bells going off, plus u can see the smaller neighborhood fireworks from there without the shibuya crush. grab a can of hot chu-hi from family mart on the way and it's a chill spot.

fwiw i think the best move is actually meiji jingu in harajuku. it's not really about fireworks there but the whole vibe is unmatched - thousands of people doing hatsumode (first shrine visit) right at midnight, the lanterns, the energy. they've got these massive bonfires and you can buy omamori for the new year. the walk from harajuku station to the shrine through the forest path at midnight is pretty magical honestly

if you really want fireworks though, just know tokyo's not big on them for new year's compared to summer festivals. disney's your best bet for a proper show but you're prob too late for tickets now. tokyo dome city does a smaller one around 11:50pm and it's free, plus you can warm up at the nearby donki if it gets too brutal

ngl the best move is to skip the big public countdowns entirely and just go to a shrine for hatsumode right after midnight. meiji jingu or zojoji get really busy but the energy is totally different from the fireworks chaos more ceremonial and peaceful. plus u get to do the whole bell ringing and first shrine visit thing which feels way more authentic than standing in shibuya for a few seconds of sparkles

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
