South African food in Tokyo?

arrow_drop_up 91 arrow_drop_down

there's a place in roppongi called spring valley brewery that sometimes does south african pop-ups, worth checking their schedule. also the safrican store in hiroo has frozen boerewors and biltong if u want to cook at home, it's near the national azabu supermarket

depends what you're after but the cape town fish market in minami-aoyama is mostly seafood and not really south african despite the name lol. there's also a guy who runs a pop-up called braai tokyo that does proper sosaties and lamb chops, he posts locations on instagram usually in yoyogi or shinjuku gyoen when the weather's good. the safrican store in hiroo really is the most consistent option though, they even have that ouma rusks and tennis biscuits if you want a taste of home

fwiw there's a little place in yoyogi uehara called africa bar that does south african stuff sometimes, not always on the menu tho. the owner travels back a lot so it depends what they brought. also the nissin world deli in azabu-juban has peri peri sauces and some SA snacks if you're craving that

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
