Which permit do I actually apply for, and what documents trip people up at the immigration office? I'd rather sort the paperwork now than scramble later, maybe over a pint at the Old Bell once I'm settled.

the permit is the same status you land on, just extended, so apply at shinagawa not minato. bring your juminhyo with the my number omitted & the tax payment certificate from your ward office, people forget that one. shinagawa gets packed, go early

Shinagawa counter 2, and bring the 4cm photo.

3x4cm actually, theyre strict about it

Tax payment certificate is the one that actually trips people up, and they only issue it same day if you're paid up, so check before you queue.

true, but ward offices only print it if you bring the payment slip from june

Yep, and grab the koseki tohon or juminhyo copy dated within 3 months, they reject older ones at counter 2.

Also bring the gensen choshuhyo, nobody mentions that one.

Ward office first, juminhyo alone won't cover it.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Residence card plus passport, they check both at the door.

juminhyo needs to be recent tho, like within 3 months

The aquarium wifi is guest-only and drops constantly, so tether off your phone. I'd take the early shift instead, 5 or 6am here lines up with US afternoon, and the Odaiba cafes open by 7.

yeah tethering is the move, shinagawa side is quieter

Fuji TV building lobby has free seating and solid wifi, quieter than the mall food courts on weekday afternoons
