The Kanda side is too open for kingfishers, they want shade and a low branch over still water. Try the north arm past the second footbridge where the bank drops steeply. Dragonfly pond gets crowded with photographers by 7, so midweek beats weekends.

Good shout, but go earlier like 5:15 if you want them still perched, by 6 they're already moving.
5:15 works but only on weekdays. saturday there's already a row of lenses on the west bank by then and the birds shift to the far side. i've had better luck 5:30 sunday when the gates open and nobody's set up yet
yeah and the window is short, once the lotus canopy closes over the water the kingfishers lose their fishing perches

agreed on the timing but check the water level first. If winter rain was light the pond stays shallow and they nest a couple weeks early. Saw one on a low branch near the second footbridge around then.
Check the pond's north bank first, warmer water there.

Worth checking the noticeboard by the gate, there's usually a flyer for whatever's renting it that month. Last I saw it was a jazz trio doing Saturday afternoon sets, which explains the noise you might hear on your walk.
It was built in the 1920s as a chapel for the foreign community, and the little graveyard behind the hedge is still technically consecrated ground.
that building's been a few things over the years. pretty sure it's a small language school / event space now, they do the occasional thing on weekends but nothing you'd call a congregation. the bell tower's just leftover from when it was a chapel
