Yoyogi koen on Sunday mornings has a regular volunteer cleanup crew, mostly expats, they meet near the main fountain around 9. Also check the Tokyo International Friends group, they do weekly walks in Shinjuku Gyoen. Same faces every week.
The Komazawa koen crew meets Saturday mornings by the Olympic monument, smaller group, easier to actually talk to people.
Also worth knowing the cleanup crew shifts to Meiji Jingu's outer gardens in winter, same 9am start near the torii.
Agree on the cleanup crew, but they wrap by 10:30 usually and half of them head to a cafe in Tomigaya after. Worth tagging along, thats where you actually get past small talk. Whats the TI Friends walk pace like, is it chatty or heads-down?

Worth checking the noticeboard by the gate, there's usually a flyer for whatever's renting it that month. Last I saw it was a jazz trio doing Saturday afternoon sets, which explains the noise you might hear on your walk.
It was built in the 1920s as a chapel for the foreign community, and the little graveyard behind the hedge is still technically consecrated ground.
that building's been a few things over the years. pretty sure it's a small language school / event space now, they do the occasional thing on weekends but nothing you'd call a congregation. the bell tower's just leftover from when it was a chapel
